Valorant is Banning Console Players Using Mouse and Keyboard

The Valorant console closed beta hasn’t been live for very long, but Riot Games’ anti-cheat system is already detecting and banning players using mouse and keyboard setups.

Riot Games is permanently banning players who use adapters to gain an unfair advantage, as the beta currently only supports controllers.

Quick Action Against Cheaters

A recent video shared on X (Twitter) by the “Anti-Cheat Police Department” shows a Valorant console match being interrupted by a red screen indicating that a cheater had been detected. This resulted in Riot automatically canceling the match and banning the cheater. Valorant tech lead Marcus Reid confirmed in a Reddit comment that the game’s anti-cheat system can detect and ban players using devices like XIM to connect a Mouse and Keyboard to their PS5 or XBOX Series X/S.

What is an XIM device?

The XIM is an adapter that allows players to connect a mouse and keyboard to their console, which the game then recognizes as a controller. Not only does this setup enable the use of mouse and keyboard in controller-only matchmaking, but it also gives these players an unfair advantage because the in-game aim assist, specifically designed for controllers, also works on these devices. Some of the alternatives to using XIM devices include purchasing a high-end controller or teaming up with a pro-player to increase your win rates.

Phillip Koskinas, head of anti-cheat at Riot Games, shared the video on X, writing, "a satisfied first customer." This indicates that Riot Games is pleased with the effectiveness of their anti-cheat system, which is already showing results less than a week into the console beta. The fast bans are proof that Riot is going all-in when it comes to preventing cheating and keeping a fair competitive environment in Valorant on consoles.

The Impact on Console Players

The use of a mouse and keyboard in controller-only lobbies gives these players a huge advantage, which jeopardizes the integrity of the game. By detecting and banning these players, Riot Games is making sure that all players compete on an even playing field. Boosting Valorant's console security and enforcing fair play are critical factors for Valorant's long-term success on consoles.

Valorant Console Beta

The Valorant console beta is still in progress, and players can sign up for a chance to participate through the official Valorant website. As the beta continues, Riot will further refine its anti-cheat measures to detect and eliminate any form of cheating. This proactive approach not only boosts player confidence but also sets a strong precedent for future updates and releases.

Riot Games’ quick reaction to the rise of mouse and keyboard users in the Valorant console beta is not surprising, and stays in line with their recent investment in anti-cheat security, marked by the success of Vanguard in League of Legends. By banning cheaters and maintaining a level playing field, Riot aims to increase the integrity of the game and foster a fair player experience. The Valorant Console beta is a long road, and players can expect more efforts to uphold these standards and ensure a competitive, enjoyable environment for all, as well as numerous updates to the game’s features over time.
