Apex Legends Wildcard Mode: Stack Legends in Showdown

With the launch of Apex Legends Season 26: Showdown right around the corner, Respawn Entertainment has unveiled a fast-paced new mode that’s not just a temporary gimmick—it’s here to stay. The new Wildcard mode is designed to shake up traditional gameplay with smaller maps, quicker engagements, and the ability to stack Legends with your squadmates for the first time in Apex Legends history.

Described by Respawn as a “high-energy experience,” Wildcard aims to lower the stakes and increase the chaos. “The goal was to create a lower-stakes, high-energy experience that lets players jump right into the action,” said principal designer J.J. Williams during a preview event. If you’re ready to get an adrenaline spike and rack up kills quickly, this mode is tailor-made for that kind of action.

What Makes Wildcard Different?

Unlike the standard 60-player battle royale format, Wildcard caps lobbies at 30 players and starts matches in a significantly smaller ring. This leads to more immediate firefights and a faster game tempo, perfect for players looking to practice or boost their mechanical skills in shorter bursts.

One standout feature of Wildcard is the introduction of Wildcards, special power-ups that can be crafted at Replicators during a match. These add an extra layer of strategy—and fun. From temporary wall-running to surprise ability enhancements, Wildcards can flip a fight on its head. For those aiming to climb the rank ladder in traditional modes, practicing fast decision-making here could give you a real edge.

Stack Legends and Dominate

In a major twist, Wildcard allows teams to pick the same Legend multiple times. Want to run triple Wraith? Go for it. This feature alone is set to boost creative team comps and chaotic skirmishes. Meta strategies are about to shift dramatically, offering a playground for both casual and competitive players to experiment.

The mode also uses the respawn mechanics introduced in the Revivals limited-time event. As long as one teammate stays alive, the rest of the squad will respawn automatically after a short delay. This keeps matches fluid and discourages early eliminations, giving everyone more chances to stay in the game and keep boosting their stats.

EVO Orbs: The New Must-Have Loot

Adding to the Wildcard experience is a new lootable item called EVO Orbs. These orbs drop from eliminated enemies and are automatically picked up, unlike weapons, which still require manual looting. EVO Orbs shorten respawn timers, level up weapons, charge shields, heal health, and even reduce your Ultimate cooldown. It's a welcome change for players who want more rewarding combat and faster momentum shifts.

Arenas Out, But Not Forgotten

While Wildcard is becoming a permanent fixture, Respawn confirmed that the 3v3 Arenas mode is going back into the vault. First introduced in Season 9 and briefly returning in Season 25, Arenas has been removed again—though Respawn reassured fans that it could make a comeback in a future season, backed by fresh insights and player data.

Whether you're a casual player looking to jump into fast-paced matches or a grinder trying to rank up in other modes, Wildcard delivers an engaging twist on the Apex Legends formula. With shorter matches, creative Legend stacking, and power-ups that offer real-time advantages, this new mode could end up boosting the game’s popularity as it enters Season 26.

Apex Legends Season 26: Showdown officially launches Tuesday, August 5 at 10 AM PT / 1 PM ET.
