Gen.G are the League of Legends MSI 2024 Champions
Gen.G Esports beat the odds and emerged victorious at the League of Legends Mid-Season Invitational, or MSI 2024 held in Chengdu, China, by defeating Bilibili Gaming in the grand final. This triumph makes Gen.G the second LCK team to ever win the MSI and one of the very few to ever defeat an LPL contender on this stage. Thanks to the Korean squad’s victory, the LCK counts as a huge boost for the biggest international tournament in LoL: an extra spot in League of Legends Worlds 2024.
After four extremely competitive matches, Gen.G secured a 3-1 win against Bilibili Gaming, despite the latter enjoying the support of their home crowd. The victory was not completely unexpected, considering Gen.G's dominant performance throughout the tournament.
Gen.G’s Path to Victory
Gen.G entered MSI as the top seed from the LCK (Korea's premier League of Legends competition) and was considered a strong contender for the title. The team, often dubbed a "super team," lived up to the hype:
- Opening Round: They swept European team Fnatic 3-0.
- Second Round: Gen.G faced Top Esports, winning a closely contested series 3-2.
- Winner's Bracket Final: They first met Bilibili Gaming here, securing a solid 3-1 victory to advance to the grand final.
Bilibili Gaming's Journey
Bilibili Gaming had a tougher route to the final:
- Upper Bracket: They defeated PSG.Talon and world champions T1.
- Lower Bracket: After Gen.G knocked them down, they faced T1 once more, winning a close 3-2 series to advance to a rematch with Gen.G in the League of Legends MSI 2024 Grand Finals.
The Grand Final Series
- Games One and Two: Gen.G dominated from start to finish, with BLG failing to gain a single moment to regroup.
- Game Three: Bilibili Gaming secured an early lead and maintained it to win the game, with Gen.G managing to almost turn the game around but failing, thanks to BLG’s amazing timing and tempo control.
- Game Four: This game was initially in Gen.G's favor, but a dramatic Baron steal by Bilibili’s jungler, Xun, turned it into an absolute nail-biter. After narrowly surviving a full base push, Gen.G held on to a naked nexus for dear life, and after a chaotic teamfight in which BLG attempted to find the space for a "backdoor," the Korean squad took down the LPL champions to become League of Legends MSI 2024 Champions.
In game two, Gen.G's Kim "Peyz" Su-hwan set a new record for the most kills in a single game at a top-level international event, achieving 28 kills. This broke the previous record of 18. Peyz's performance was particularly dominant; however, it was the huge boost he received from a turnaround play from Bilibili that extended the game long enough for him to reach such a high kill count. Gen.G's victory earned them the $50,000 first-place prize and an automatic qualification for the League of Legends World Championship, set to take place in London later this year. |
Bilibili Gaming received $40,000 for second place, while T1 and G2 Esports took home $30,000 and $25,000 for third and fourth places, respectively.
Gen.G's triumph at MSI solidifies their position as a leading team in the League of Legends competitive scene and sets high expectations for their performance at the upcoming World Championship.
