Is Valorant's player count larger than Counter-Strike 2's in 2024?

Riot Game’s first-person shooter took the gaming world by storm and has been growing fast over the last few years. Valorant’s Counter Strike-style gameplay with added components from classic MOBAs like League of Legends might not be an original idea; after all, we’ve all played Overwatch in the past, but Riot’s improvements made it the leader of combat shooter games.

Valorant vs Counter Strike 2

Last year, Valve released Counter-Strike 2 as a response to CS:GO’s leaking player base, but despite CS2's boosts and its foundation on the success of Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, players wanted more from the sequel. The community’s expectations can impact the overall size of an online game's player base, and in this case, they really did.

Valorant, three and a half years after its official launch, continues to dominate in popularity when compared to Counter-Strike 2.

Both Valorant and CS2 are fundamentally tactical shooters, but Riot integrated superhuman abilities into Valorant to grant players a more interesting experience. This twist not only heightened the game's enjoyment but also created a space for new playstyles and strategies, adding depth to professional matches that can’t be found in any other game. In contrast, Valve's shooter maintained the same old executions with improved visuals.

What is the player count for Valorant and CS2?

As of now, Valorant boasts a larger player base than CS2. The Tracker Network reported that approximately 10,861,340 players engaged in at least one match in January 2024. Valorant's all-time high reached an impressive 6,627,830 players, while CS2 capped at 1,802,853. These numbers underline the substantial success of Riot's shooter, overtaking the numbers that Valve achieved with its recent release. Despite CS2's initial hype, Valorant has consistently maintained a solid player count over its lifespan, boosting these numbers during esports events like the VCT Masters.

Valorant Player Count 2024

CS2, being a Steam game, allows for a more straightforward approximation of its player numbers. Steam charts indicate an average of 795,207 players per day in the last 30 days, but these statistics can rapidly change. The complete stats remain unupdated, and a clearer picture might emerge next month if Valve decides to show us the real numbers.

Considering the significant disparity in player bases, it seems unlikely that CS2 will catch up to Valorant's numbers. Riot's continuous content updates, coupled with a rich character lore, have created an emotional connection with the community—an element lacking in Valve's titles, which remain focused on competitive esports with straightforward mechanics.

Valorant's accessible learning curve and casual play style contribute to its surging popularity. While showcasing high-level gameplay in international tournaments, Valorant provides a recreational platform for players of all ages seeking a relaxing experience as well. Moreover, recent changes in the Valorant Premier system are shaping a meaningful Path to Pro, offering talented players a direct route to the professional scene.

The distinctiveness of Valorant, in its vivid maps, diverse cosmetics, unique characters, and special abilities, gives the game a very unique identity, setting it apart from the updated but familiar graphical improvements of CS2.
