The Valorant Champions 2023 is over with Elon Musk in attendance. Evil Geniuses vs. Paper Rex was a match for the ages!
Both sides showed strength at various points during the final, which was a competitive contest. Paper Rex had a two-map ban edge due to coming from the upper bracket, but EG was not about to give up early, especially with matches on Split, Bind, and Lotus.
The grand finals got a huge viewership boost after a bizarre surprise, as Elon Musk was seen in the audience at the August 27 game between the Singaporean squad Paper Rex and the Canadian team Evil Geniuses. The moment the crowd realized it was Musk, they started to mock the billionaire, and the stream rapidly turned away from him and changed to a replay of the current match. One of the commentators was perplexed by the audience's emotional response to seeing Musk's face and said, "Where's that coming from, that can't be from in here, surely," before asking if the reaction was greater than the crowd chants that Valorant legend tenZ got. |
The audience began shouting "Bring back Twitter," as though to make it plain who their anger was intended against. The announcers' assertion that the audience was refocusing on the championship game at the very moment their spontaneous chant began made it all the more delightfully hilarious. In case you were wondering, it was Evil Geniuses that emerged victorious from the Valorant tournament match.

Who won the 2023 Valorant Champions tournament?
EG had a difficult road to the finals. With 2-0 victories against FunPlus Phoenix and FUT Esports, they easily won their group, but as they advanced to the playoffs, they faced some challenging opponents. They defeated EDward Gaming 2-1 before defeating DRX 2-0 to set up their first encounter with Paper Rex. Due to how equally matched the two teams were, they ended up losing this upper bracket match 2-1, with the last map going into overtime. They would then defeat the defending champions, Loud, in a very tense game that concluded with a score of 3-2 to set up a rematch for the championship crown.
On their side, Paper Rex easily won their group, defeating KRÜ Esports and EDward Gaming 2-0. After defeating FUT Esports 2-0 in the opening round of the playoffs, despite the odds, they defeated Loud 2-1 and moved on to the lower bracket with a gigantic moral boost, setting up their first encounter versus EG in the upper bracket finals.
The first two rounds of the finals were really competitive, and they could have gone either way, with EG winning map one 13-10 and Paper Rex reversing the situation to win map two 13-11. The best-of-five final was effectively reduced to a best-of-three as a result, and EG then put up a spectacular performance on Bind to take the map 13-5 and significantly shift the tide in their favor. The following map, Lotus, one of the more recent Valorant maps, ended up being the last one in the entire tournament, with EG winning 13-10 to claim the title of Valorant Champions of 2023.
In addition to being the Valorant World Champions thanks to their victory over Paper Rex, EG now has a whopping $1 million to take home. Second-place finisher Paper Rex received $400,000, while Loud, the winner from the previous year, received $250,000 for third place. The team many predicted would win the competition, Fnatic, was only able to finish in fourth place and earn $130,000.
Congratulations to Evil Geniuses on becoming the 2023 Valorant Champions!
