Worlds 2023 Swiss Stage – Day 9: Champions Fall and Champions Rise
The League of Legends Worlds 2023 Swiss Stage ended with a bang, as six teams battled it out for their final chance to qualify for the Knockout Stage. After NRG shocked the world by advancing, it's now the LEC's turn to prove their worth. Can they rise to the occasion?
KT vs DK
This long-awaited clash of titans didn't disappoint. The former world champions DK climbed back from the depths of the 0-2 bracket, while kt Rolster vowed to secure a world championship this year. DK displayed their early-game experience, but kt seized control with a stunning play by BDD, followed by Baron and the Elder Drake , boosting them them to victory in game 1. Game 2 was a swifter affair. kt Rolster, already warmed up, had no intention of slowing down. Despite DK getting three Baron buffs, kt never fell behind. KT Aiming was on fire, and after a grueling 43 minutes, kt Rolster took down Showmaker and Deft, earning a 2-0 victory and a spot in the Knockout stage.
FNC vs WBG
The first-ever League of Legends World Champions entered the series with a vigor we hadn't seen from the LEC heroes in years. In game 1, the EMEA team roared, maintaining control and keeping pressure on WBG throughout the match, resulting in an undisputed win for Fnatic. After a pep talk from TheShy, WBG was ready to take back the reins. A significant Baron fight at 20 minutes shifted the game in WBG's favor as they took down Fnatic and secured the buff. With the legendary Baron stat boost, WBG forced Fnatic into another teamfight, tipping the scales in their favor. They sieged FNC's base, and a crucial tower dive by the overfed tanks TheShy and WeiWei led to a decisive victory for WeiboGaming. The final game of the series was a disaster for Fnatic. Weibo maintained their lead in every aspect and gained a 5,000-gold advantage within 10 minutes. Despite Fnatic's attempts to skirmish their way back, WBG knew what they had to do. Weibo relentlessly engaged Fnatic, forcing them to fight at a disadvantage, boosting their gold lead. Soon, all that remained was to push the Nexus, leaving Fnatic powerless to defend their base. As their turrets crumbled, so did their dreams. WBG advanced to the Knockouts stage, while Fnatic was sent home.
G2 vs BLG
This was destined to be the match of the day. The LEC champions had never backed down from an LPL or LCK team. Their unconventional playstyle had consistently worked in their favor, but BLG only consider JDG as their true competition. Bin, wielding Jax, showcased why he's widely regarded as the world's best top laner. BLG quickly gained an advantage with an early Drake Soul and continued to pressure G2 into teamfights. In just 34 minutes, BLG demolished G2's base to secure the first win. As the second game began, the hopes of the LEC rested on G2's shoulders, and they gave it their all, dominating BLG for most of the game. Pick after pick, G2 Esports kept their dream alive. At 27 minutes, with a Mountain Drake Soul, they were unexpectedly taken down by BLG, as Bin and Elk turned the game on its head. The game swung back and forth until G2 secured the Baron and Elder Drake. In a miraculous dive, Hans Sama secured a quadra-kill, and G2 destroyed the Nexus, tying the series 1-1.
The final match began with three kills for each team before the minions even reached the lane. Both teams clashed repeatedly, each side striving for their last opportunity to progress in the tournament. BLG invested more and eventually reaped the rewards. We've witnessed G2 come back from losing games, but BLG was determined to secure it today. After a final Baron buff and the boost from the Chemtech Drake Soul, G2 fell to the LPL's second seed. The LEC's dream came to an end here as both European teams were eliminated.
Our MVP for the Swiss Stage final is BLG Bin.
