Worlds 2023 Quarterfinals - Day 4: Scout and Faker, Master vs. Student
The LCK’s last chance stands on T1’s shoulders. Faker, Zeus, Oner, Gumayusi, and Keria face off against the LPL titans LNG. But the face-off we’re all waiting for is the mid-lane matchup between LNG’s Scout and his former mentor, T1’s legend, Faker.
Expectations were at an all-time high for this series, especially since T1 is the last remaining team from the Korean region, where the tournament is taking place this year. Both squads are extremely skilled, but T1, the most revered team in League of Legends history, is in amazing shape, and their mechanical prowess showed across all lanes as they dominated LNG with some of the most beautiful individual plays the tournament has seen so far.
There’s a reason why this team is a fan favourite, and it showed today! After stealing the fourth drake, getting a dragon soul, T1 managed to get a Baron buff, leading to a huge gold boost, but it clearly wasn’t necessary as T1 was already dominating. LNG, despite their impressive performance, was helpless to stop T1. With the help of his duo, Keria, T1’s ADC Gumayusi tore the Chinese squad to shreds easily, and without wasting any time, T1 claimed the first win of the tournament.
The second game was equally balanced at first, with both teams switching up their strategies. Scout picked Jayce, which was a perfect counter for Faker’s Sylas. This was the matchup we were all waiting for, as LNG’s mid-laner battled his former mentor.
Sadly for LNG, T1 is much more than Faker, and the collective of League of Legends veterans captured every drake and objective methodically. After LNG’s last ditch effort to get the Elder Drake, the Korean squad got an Ace and once again rushed the base instead of thinking about any other objective. After all, you win by destroying the Nexus!
2-0 in T1’s favour, it’s all or nothing for LNG. Can T1 save the Korean dream, or will the LPL get four teams in the semi-finals?
Once again, we were set for an incredible match where fights broke out like fireworks! We have to point out the bot-lane battles at the 9 and 10-minute marks as two of the highlights of the day.
Both teams remained in close proximity to each other during the match in terms of gold, as expected in Worlds matches between high-level teams, but at 18 minutes, already at Soul Point, T1 used a teamfight distraction to use the herald in the mid-lane and take out two turrets.
T1 Zeus, playing his signature champion, Jayce, was unstoppable. T1 took an undisputed Baron buff, and using this stat boost, split pushed LNG’s last lines of defence, backed out to get the Hextech Soul, and stormed into LNG’s base. One more bait, and it’s game over. In an incredible dash, Faker’s Azir swooped down and dragged LNG’s squad with his Emperor’s Divide.
T1 took out the LPL and showed that they are simply on a whole other level!
Gumayusi’s father used to tell him he didn’t want him to be “just a video game player”. Today, he proved that he’s a lot more than that. Our MVP for Day 4 of the League of Legends Worlds 2023 Knockout Stage is Gumayusi.
Next week we’ll find out whether Weibo or BLG will make it to the finals, and we’ll have the match that’s on everyone’s mind since day 1 of Worlds, T1 versus JDG!
