Worlds 2023 Play-Ins – Day 2: The Rift belongs to the Junglers!

PSG Talon and Loud Gaming battle it out for the first seed. Team Whales defies all odds. League of Legends Worlds 2023, Day 3, was insane!

Match 1: PSG Talon vs. LOUD Gaming

Day 3 of Worlds kicked off with a clash between PSG Talon and LOUD Gaming. Route used Sivir, who made her debut in Game 1, in the bot lane. PSG's Junjia, playing Jarvan IV, carried his team with exceptional engages, creating crucial opportunities for an early-game advantage. At the 25-minute mark, a pivotal fight saw LLL Route's Sivir clean up PSG's squad, thanks to LLL Robo's Renekton, and secure the first Baron buff of the game. PSG then claimed the second Baron buff, boosting their stats back to LLL’s level, and before the chance was over, they rapidly engaged, wiped out LOUD's team, and concluded the match in one fell swoop.

In Game 2, PSG seized control of the early game, dominating every lane. They maintained a steady gold advantage, culminating in a surprise engage at 22 minutes, netting them three kills and the Baron buff. Following an ill-fated engage from LOUD's Croc, playing Malphite, PSG fortified their lead. In the closing moments of the match, PSG's Wako, as Kai'sa, executed a remarkable Quadra kill, sealing the deal as PSG triumphed in one of the most one-sided matches of Worlds 2023.

Match 2: Flying Oysters vs. TW Team Whales

The match between Flying Oysters and TW Team Whales promised to be highly competitive. CFO asserted dominance early on, with Shunn's Kalista shining as one of the standout performances of the year. CFO Shunn is a dark horse amongst this year’s AD-Carries and an absolute boost to the underdog team’s chances. After securing three Dragon buffs and carefully securing objectives, a massive mid-lane team fight unfolded. TW Gloryy orchestrated a remarkable turnaround despite being engaged on, showing everyone what League of Legends is all about.

At the 26-minute mark, an extraordinary play unfolded, and we have to say, so far, this is the play of the week! As CFO ShiauC, on Rell, piled up Team Whales, with CFO Rest's Gnar and CFO Jimien's Orianna delivering a breathtaking Shockwave, there was absolutely nothing TW could do to survive. Notably, ShiauC's hilarious reaction added to the excitement of the moment. A final skirmish near the bot-lane Inhibitor turret cemented CFO's dominance, and they secured the Nexus, winning Game 1.

Game 2 was a much tighter contest. Despite CFO grabbing some early kills, Team Whales, thanks to a standout performance by Gloryy, managed to gain the upper hand. TW focused diligently on objectives and secured the first three drake buffs, boosting their stats to make sure they weren’t left behind. Although the game lacked the fireworks of Game 1, Team Whales turned the tables in every single team fight. After a less than perfect engage from CFO, countered by TW BeanJ and TW Sparda, Team Whales stormed to victory, delighting their fans.

Team Whales BeanJ

In Game 3, TW BeanJ reprised his role as Jarvan IV, with TW Artemins on Kai'sa.

While CFO seemed to control the early game better, with Shunn holding a 1200-gold lead over Artemis by the 14-minute mark, it was the first major team fight at the Herald that set the tone for the match. CFO's Gemini, as Vi, provided impeccable peel for CFO JimieN to dismantle Team Whales, despite TW Gloryy landing a perfect Shockwave.

As the match progressed with both teams trading blows, Team Whales surprised CFO by sneakily taking the mid-lane inhibitor and damaging the nexus turrets to almost half HP. In response, CFO executed a brilliant pick, flanking Team Whales and taking the mid-lane inhibitor as well. The battle raged on, with both sides securing picks over the next few minutes, leading to an epic showdown at the 35-minute mark in the drake pit. In a stunning display of skill, TW Artemis positioned himself as only he can, deleting the opposing team and sealing the fate of the Flying Oysters. TW Sparda, using the last 15 seconds of his Baron buff, rushed mid, boosting a single minion wave, and the underdog Team Whales pushed the Flying Oysters' Nexus as quickly as they could, ending the game and claiming their place as the first seed of the group!

Our MVP for Day 3 is TW BeanJ, the absolute playmaker of today’s series as Jarvan IV.

Don’t miss tomorrow’s matches! Day 4 will feature Movistar R7 and GAM Esports battling it out, and one team will be sent home.

It’s also Japan’s last chance as DetonatioN FocusMe faces off against the LEC’s Team BDS. The winner gets one last chance against CTBC Flying Oyster; the loser is out of the competition.

Stay tuned for more, and keep on cheering for your favorite League of Legends GODS!
