What is the Riot ID? Changing Your Riot ID and Summoner Name

Heads up, Summoners! On November 20, 2023, Riot Games will remove the traditional "Summoner Names" and transition players exclusively to "Riot IDs." This change aims to create a more unified experience across all of Riot's games, streamlining the player identification system and boosting its connection to the evolving lore of the League of Legends universe.

What is the Riot ID

Players may have mixed emotions about this transition, as in-game names hold sentimental value, whether you've been a part of the gaming community from the very start or just joined recently. Riot Games is committed to making this change as seamless as possible, ensuring players feel connected to their Riot ID as much as they did with their Summoner Name. However,  it’s important to say that in-game names will no longer be unique.

If you play Valorant, you’re already accustomed to seeing different players with the same name and different taglines. The same thing will apply to League of Legends starting November 20.

Why the Transition?

The decision to move from Summoner Names to Riot IDs is rooted in the evolving lore of Runeterra and the League of Legends universe. Initially, players were portrayed as Summoners who brought champions to the Rift, but over the years, the focus shifted to the champions themselves. The term "Summoner" became disconnected from the lore, prompting this update to better align with the current world of League of Legends and create consistency across all titles.

More importantly, this transition aims to boost technical aspects, providing a more fluid experience for players across different games under Riot Games.

How do I transition from my Summoner Name to a Riot ID?

Players need not worry about taking any action for this update. If you've played a Riot Game before, you already have a Riot ID. To find your Riot ID, you can log into your account on any Riot Games website like League or Valorant’s official website and check your Account Settings, or check within League of Legends by hovering over your profile picture at the top right.

How often can I change my Riot ID?

With Riot ID becoming the standard, Riot Games is introducing a new system for changing names. After the transition on November 20, every player will receive a free name change every 365 days. If players wish to change their names more frequently, a fee, similar to the current Summoner Name system, will be applied.

This decision aims to give weight to the primary name of a player, ensuring it reflects their chosen identity in the game. Additionally, it helps maintain a more stable friend list and community interaction by discouraging constant name changes.

How can I change my Riot ID?

To change your Riot ID you can login to Riot Games, League of Legends or Valorant’s website, hover over your name in the top right corner, go to Settings, and enter your new Riot ID and tagline.

Players will receive a free name change immediately after the transition on November 20. If additional name changes are desired, they can be purchased on the accounts page for approximately $10 USD in in-game currency. Initially, only Riot Points and Legends of Runeterra Coins will be supported, with plans to expand to other in-game currencies across different titles in the future.

To ease the transition, Riot Games will offer additional free name changes in the coming months. Updates on free name change resets and support for various in-game currencies will be communicated through Riot Games' social channels and Player Support articles.

For more information, players can visit Riot Games' Player Support articles for Summoner Names and Riot IDs.

Mark your calendar for November 20 and stay tuned for more Riot Games news and updates!
