Riftbound Brings League of Legends to the Tabletop Game Style

League of Legends is no stranger to spin-offs—from animated series to mobile titles—but Riot Games is now taking the franchise somewhere new: the physical tabletop. Enter Riftbound, a brand-new trading card game that blends familiar faces from the world of LoL with a fresh, in-person experience built for card game enthusiasts and fans alike.

Debuting at PAX East 2025, Riftbound: League of Legends Trading Card Game is designed to appeal to both collectors and competitive players. It’s not Riot’s first foray into physical games, having previously released Mechs vs. Minions and Tellstones, but this time, they’re stepping into the same arena as Magic: The Gathering and Pokémon.

Familiar Champions, New Mechanics

Players will instantly recognize champions like Jinx, Yasuo, Viktor, and Volibear in the demo decks, with even more familiar faces like Miss Fortune and Kayn making appearances in various alternate forms. Game Director Dave Guskin explained that the goal was to create a solid mix of fan favorites—from classic champions to those made popular by Arcane.

Each champion belongs to a color-coded archetype that defines its playstyle. For example, red decks like Jinx's are aggressive, encouraging players to go all-in. Viktor’s yellow deck emphasizes building wide boards and swarming battlefields with numbers. These archetypes help players connect with champions through the mechanics, not just the art.

Battlefields: A New Kind of Objective

One of the biggest innovations in Riftbound is its battlefield system. Instead of focusing purely on reducing an opponent’s life total to zero, players fight to control battlefield zones. Summoning units to your base, then sending them out to claim or defend zones, adds a layer of strategic depth. The first player to score eight points—by holding both battlefields at the start of their turn—wins the game.

Each battlefield also offers unique bonuses, from extra resources to tactical effects like recalling units mid-battle. This shift in objective creates dynamic matches and keeps the focus on board presence and positioning—much like the lane control seen in League of Legends. For LoL fans looking to boost their card game skills, this familiar gameplay loop can feel like a natural transition.

Translating LoL Into TCG Language

While Riftbound is not a one-to-one adaptation of LoL, it mirrors the spirit of the MOBA. Keywords like “ganking” allow players to move units between battlefields, echoing the strategic lane swaps common in ranked LoL play. Teemo’s stealth mechanics show up as hidden cards that surprise opponents, just like he does in the brush.

You can try out these mechanics as soon as Riftbound releases in October of 2025.

Riftbound Jinx

Legends, a unique feature in each deck, define your champion’s special identity. Jinx’s legend, for instance, rewards an empty hand with bonus card draws, pushing her all-out aggression. Viktor, by contrast, builds armies of tokens, steadily overwhelming the board—each style offering a distinct experience while staying true to the original character design.

Built for In-Person Play

Although Riot already has a digital card game in Legends of Runeterra, Guskin was clear that Riftbound is focused on in-person multiplayer. Designed from the ground up for social experiences, the game supports a variety of formats beyond just 1v1—players can also compete in free-for-alls or 2v2 team battles using the same 40-card decks.

This emphasis on community and adaptability makes Riftbound an ideal choice for players who want to boost their tabletop strategy while still enjoying the lore and depth of League of Legends. Guskin confirmed that the game will support collectors too, but the early focus is on playability and fun.

A Promising Start for a Physical League of Legends Game

Riftbound is still in its early stages, but initial impressions are strong. With smart battlefield mechanics, deck variety, and tight synergy with LoL’s world, it promises to be more than just another TCG. For fans who want to rank up in real life through clever plays and sharp deckbuilding, Riftbound might be the perfect next step.

Whether you're a League of Legends veteran looking to bring your champion to the tabletop or a card game enthusiast seeking something fresh, Riftbound is shaping up to be a compelling new way to experience Runeterra.
