Doublelift Permanently Retires from Competitive League of Legends

In a heartfelt 14-minute video, Yiliang "Doublelift" Peng, the North American League of Legends legend, officially announced his retirement on December 1st. This isn't the first time Doublelift has announced his retirement, but he's keen to clarify that this time, it's for real.

Doublelift Retiring League of Legends

Doublelift's journey in the League of Legends Championship Series (LCS) has been nothing short of legendary, spanning over a decade, with his presence boosting the competitive scene’s relevance in the gaming market. Starting in 2011 with Counter Logic Gaming, he showcased his AD Carry skills, growing into one of the most iconic players in LoL history. With stints in teams like TSM and Team Liquid, he earned three LCS titles with TSM and achieved back-to-back wins with Team Liquid, solidifying his influence on the U.S. League scene.

After a hiatus in 2020 and a focus on streaming, Doublelift made a comeback in 2023 with 100 Thieves. However, his recent retirement announcement stems from concerns about the uncertain landscape of the LCS and esports in general.

In his retirement video, Doublelift highlighted the financial sacrifice he made to return to professional play. However, the evolving nature of the LCS, with teams scaling back spending and uncertainties in rosters, prompted him to reevaluate his priorities. The sudden reduction in the number of LCS teams to eight in 2024 raised concerns about the overall quality of competition.

Expressing his desire to compete at an international level, Doublelift felt that the sacrifice required this time would be more significant. He emphasized that with fewer teams willing to invest in their Esports divisions, essential aspects outside the roster, like support staff and resources, could be compromised.

His ultimate dream of winning Worlds seemed increasingly elusive, boosting the idea of retirement. Doublelift acknowledged that he's older now, turning 30, and the priorities in his life have shifted. Reflecting on the sacrifices made during seasons 6–8, he recognized the need to consider other aspects of life, such as relationships and family.

Looking to the future, Doublelift plans to focus on full-time content creation. He expressed gratitude for his community and the League community at large, stating that he wants to remain engaged and contribute in various ways.

While he's stepping away from professional play, his passion for the game and the community remains strong.

As Doublelift bids farewell to the competitive stage, he leaves behind a legacy filled with accomplishments, heartbreaks, and shared moments with supporters who have seen his development since he was just a 17-year-old rookie. Despite the challenges, Doublelift expresses genuine happiness and appreciation for living out the dream he had as a young, aspiring player. The community, the journey, and the memories are forever etched in his heart.

While he may have retired from professional play, Doublelift's connection with the League of Legends community is far from over. As he transitions to a new chapter, fans can expect to see more of him engaged and boosting the game and community that have been such integral parts of his life.
