Arcane Producer Helms New Wheel of Time Games and Animated Series

The Wheel weaves as the Wheel wills, and right now, it’s weaving a massive comeback for Robert Jordan’s legendary fantasy universe. If you thought The Wheel of Time was taking a breather after its live-action run wrapped up, think again. The franchise is gearing up for an ambitious transmedia expansion, and the creative muscle behind it should have every fantasy and gaming fan paying close attention.

A brand-new wave of feature films, animated projects, and video games is officially in development. The best part? The team leading the charge has a proven track record of building some of the biggest entertainment franchises on the planet.

The Dream Team Behind the Expansion

At the forefront of this massive revival is Thomas Vu. If that name sounds familiar, it’s because he was a driving creative force behind the global phenomenon League of Legends and served as an executive producer on Netflix’s universally acclaimed animated series, Arcane.

Vu is joining forces with Anthony Borquez (Initiate Entertainment) alongside iwot Studios leaders Rick Selvage and Larry Mondragon. Together, they are setting out to breathe fresh life into the property, taking it far beyond the adaptations we’ve seen so far.

This new partnership is rolling out an aggressive and exciting slate:

  • An animated television series
  • Feature-length animated films
  • A brand-new PC and mobile video game

The primary goal of this multi-format push is twofold. First, the animated projects are being tailored to capture a younger audience, introducing a new generation to the sprawling mythology of the books. Second, the video games are designed to give longtime fans an interactive way to explore the world they already love.

Navigating the Modern Gaming Landscape

Breaking into today’s gaming market is no easy task. Modern gamers are incredibly competitive and highly value their time. Nowadays, gamers are interested in more than lore, and it's incredibly common today for players to seek out a LoL boost just to skip the grueling ranked grind and jump straight into high-tier competitive play and even to spend hours watching streamers just to learn a couple of tricks. To hit Arcane's levels of success, the upcoming Wheel of Time PC and mobile game will need to respect players' time by keeping them hooked from the start, and we know that can be a risky choice in entertainment.

Fortunately, Vu knows exactly how to build sustainable, engaging gaming models. During his tenure at Riot Games, he was instrumental in boosting League of Legends into an absolute powerhouse counting with over 100 million monthly players. In an era where multiplayer games dominate the charts, Vu’s deep understanding of player retention and community building is exactly what The Wheel of Time needs to thrive in the gaming space.

Expanding, Not Replacing

What makes this announcement particularly exciting is that this new slate of projects isn't stepping on the toes of anything currently in the works. iwot Studios has made it crystal clear that Vu’s animated and gaming projects are completely separate from other previously announced titles.

That means the 3D animated feature The White Tower is still happening. The live-action movie Age of Legends, directed by Kari Skogland, is still on the way. And yes, for the hardcore gamers out there, the AAA open-world RPG currently in development at iwot Games Montréal is still very much alive. This is all part of a massive, coordinated strategy that has been rapidly picking up steam since the Amazon series was canceled last year.

A Vision for the Future

Vu is stepping into this beloved fantasy world with the exact same ambitious mindset he brought to Runeterra.

"I see tremendous opportunity in expanding The Wheel of Time into fully authentic, integrated, interactive, and animated storytelling experiences," Vu recently shared. "The depth of the mythology provides a foundation for sustained, multi-platform franchise growth."

Rick Selvage, echoing the excitement of the fanbase, expressed total confidence in their new partner. He highlighted Vu’s unique ability to scale narrative worlds into global phenomenons, noting that his background sitting right at the intersection of technology, storytelling, and franchise architecture makes him the perfect fit to bring the next chapter of the saga to global audiences.

While we don't have hard release dates or specific plot details just yet, iwot Studios has already teased a proof-of-concept rendering of Rand al’Thor, giving fans a small taste of the stunning new animated direction.

If Thomas Vu and his team can deliver even a fraction of the storytelling magic and visual quality they pulled off with Arcane, The Wheel of Time is about to enter its golden age.
