League of Legends Season 16 is shaping up to be absolutely wild. Officially dubbed "Pandemonium," the second season of 2026 is dropping a massive content bomb on April 29th with Patch 26.9.

If you’re tired of the current meta, get ready for a massive breath of fresh air. Between major adjustments to role quests, a serious nostalgia trip with returning runes, and an aggressive new crackdown on toxic players, this patch is shaking up the Rift in a big way.

Role Quests Finally Make Sense

It's time for the toplane to say goodbye to the flat 12.5% bonus experience from all sources. The new toplane quest reward will focus heavily on providing bonus experience specifically for teamfighting. The goal here is simple: reward a wider variety of top lane playstyles rather than just giving a massive advantage to AFK split-pushers.

Midlane is getting the biggest overhaul. The empowered recall reward is officially being scrapped. Instead, completing your midlane role quest grants a permanent 6% bonus to your AD and AP. This is a massive scaling buff that will massively benefit players who want to carry the late game.

A Shakeup to Build Diversity

Riot wants to bring creativity and strategy back into the shop. To do this, they are overhauling several items and bringing back some absolute fan-favorite runes.

Item Adjustments: Say your goodbyes to Trailblazer and Opportunity, as they are being removed from the game completely. Meanwhile, Dusk and Dawn are getting stat tweaks. To fill the void, Riot is adding two brand-new starting items and highly-anticipated omnivamp boots (bruisers and duelists are going to love these).

Runes Returning: Nostalgia alert! Deathfire Touch and Stormraider’s Surge are making a grand return to the Sorcery tree. Stormraider’s will officially be replacing Phase Rush as the go-to movement speed boosting keystone.

The Next Champion: A Midlane AP Assassin

We finally have details on the 173rd champion joining the League roster. Dropping in Season Two Act 2, the newest addition will be a midlane AP assassin. Interestingly, Riot confirmed this will be the only new champion released in 2026.

The last AP assassin we got was Aurora, who completely dominated both solo queue and professional play. If this new champion plays anything like a traditional assassin, they will thrive on roaming to side lanes for catches. Combine that playstyle with the newly forgiving midlane role quests and the return of Stormraider’s Surge, and we might be looking at a top-tier carry right out of the gate.

The Best Update Yet: Ending the Inting Problem

Let’s be real: there is nothing worse than playing out of your mind, only to have a teammate intentionally feed and ruin the game. Riot is finally implementing a behavior mechanic that players have been begging for.

Starting in a few patches, if the system detects a player intentionally "inting," it will trigger an early surrender vote for the rest of the team—functioning just like an AFK remake.

Here is how the LP will work if the vote passes:

• Innocent Teammates: Lose 0 LP (LP Neutral).
• Enemy Team: Gains full LP for the win.
• The Inter & Their Premade: Take the full LP loss and receive immediate punishment.

This is an incredible quality-of-life update that respects your time and effort. However, even with better behavior systems in place, the ranked ladder can still feel like an endless grind.
