New CS2 Map Splinter Drops While Valve Cooks Cache
If you’ve been anxiously waiting for Cache to make its grand return to Counter-Strike 2, you aren’t alone. But while Valve takes its sweet time perfecting the beloved classic, legendary map creator FMPONE has dropped a brand-new project to keep the community busy.
Enter Splinter, a custom bomb defusal map that might just be the best showcase of the Source 2 engine we’ve seen so far.
A Visual Masterpiece in Source 2
Set in an abandoned lumber yard, Splinter is an absolute feast for the eyes. FMPONE leaned heavily into a warm, autumnal color palette packed with rich oranges and greens, all framed by a striking snowy mountain backdrop. The contrast makes everything pop beautifully.

But as any competitive player knows, gorgeous scenery doesn't mean much if you can't actually see the enemy team. Thankfully, despite the heavy environmental detailing, player visibility remains excellent. Because the visibility is so crisp, the map is genuinely viable for real competitive play right out of the gate. Finding unique angles and learning the map's geometry early can act as a natural boost for your overall game sense in Counter Strike, giving you a serious edge if Valve ever decides to move it into the official matchmaking rotation. |
The only catch right now is the performance. Early optimization is a bit rocky, which might give some players a bit of déjà vu, as FMPONE’s early CS2 Cache previews faced similar frame-rate critiques. Still, as updates roll out, we can expect the map to smooth out considerably.
Tight Corners and Open Bombsites
As for how it actually plays, Splinter features a fairly compact layout. You’ll be navigating tight, claustrophobic corners that seamlessly link the indoor and outdoor sections. Once you push into the bombsites, however, the map opens up entirely, offering plenty of room for creative utility usage and chaotic retakes.
Will Valve actually pick it up? It’s highly possible. They previously added Thera—another one of FMPONE’s creations—to the community pool, so Splinter getting the same treatment isn't out of the question.
Let's be real: the daily Premier grind can be exhausting. If you're tired of toxic lobbies and sweating over your Elo, stepping away from the main servers is a great idea. Rather than tilting into a massive losing streak, why not start looking into Counter Strike rank boosting? You can forget about the frustrating grind, grab a few friends and run custom workshop maps like Splinter, which is just the perfect way to reset and remember why you love the game in the first place.
Where is CS2 Cache?
Now, let’s talk about the map everyone is really waiting for. FMPONE is best known for creating Cache, which he officially sold to Valve last year. Fans have been begging for a CS2 port, hoping to see it back in the Active Duty pool before the end of the year.
Recently, esports organization NAVI took to X (formerly Twitter) to ask Valve point-blank why CS2 Cache hasn’t dropped yet. Valve’s response was surprisingly transparent, simply stating: “It’s cooking.”
|
They doubled down on this sentiment in a reply to CS streamer Cooper, adding that, “Of all things, Cache does not deserve to be microwaved.” Yes, the wait is agonizing. But honestly? It’s a massive relief to hear Valve is taking their time. They know exactly how important Cache is to the game's legacy, and they aren't going to rush out a half-baked version just to meet a deadline. When Cache finally arrives, it’s going to be fully cooked, polished, and entirely worth the wait. |
