Counter-Strike 2 Closer to Breaking CS:GO’s Player Record

Counter-Strike 2 is on the verge of making history. Valve’s latest iteration of its tactical FPS is rapidly closing in on Counter-Strike: Global Offensive’s all-time concurrent player record, proving that the series remains a dominant force on Steam.

CS2’s Meteoric Rise on Steam

Steam’s top games have seen their fair share of surprises over the years. Some titles skyrocket to fame, only to plummet just as quickly. But Counter-Strike 2 is a different beast. Since its launch, it has held the number one spot on Steam’s charts, and now, it’s just shy of overtaking CSGO’s long-standing record.

Valve officially replaced CSGO with CS2 on September 27, 2023. Since then, the game has consistently pulled in over a million concurrent players. While it has come close to breaking the record before, the latest player count boost suggests that a new milestone is imminent.

CS2 Nears a Historic Player Peak

On Sunday, February 16, Counter-Strike 2 hit an astonishing peak of 1,744,015 concurrent players. That leaves a gap of just 74,000 players between CS2’s highest-ever count and CSGO’s record of 1.818 million. If the trend continues, an all-time high could be reached any day now.

For perspective, only three other games have ever surpassed CS2’s current peak: Palworld, Black Myth: Wukong, and PUBG. That puts Valve’s shooter in elite company, cementing its place as one of the most played games in Steam’s history.

What’s Fueling the Surge in CS2’s Player Count?

Several factors are driving this sudden boost in player activity. One of the biggest is Premier Season 2, which kicked off at the end of January. This season brought several key changes, including:

  • Map Rotation: Vertigo was replaced by the classic Train map.
  • Weapon Adjustments: The M4A4’s price was reduced, making it a more viable option.
  • FAMAS Buffs: The FAMAS saw an accuracy boost, making it more reliable in key situations.

Beyond in-game changes, the PGL Cluj-Napoca tournament has also played a role. The tournament, featuring 16 top teams battling for a $1.25 million prize pool, kicked off in mid-February.

If this event is indeed driving the rank climb in player numbers, the upward trend could continue until the tournament ends on February 23.

    A Consistent Climb in 2024

According to SteamDB, CS2’s player count has been steadily rising since mid-January. This follows a slight dip at the end of 2024, showing that the game’s momentum is stronger than ever. With esports tournaments, seasonal updates, and an ever-growing community, Counter-Strike 2’s reign at the top of Steam doesn’t seem to be ending anytime soon.

Could we be witnessing a new all-time record soon? The numbers certainly suggest so. All eyes are now on Counter-Strike 2 as it edges closer to taking the throne from its predecessor.
