CS2 Joins Esports Nations Cup with $1.3M Prize Pool

The competitive Counter-Strike 2 calendar is about to get significantly more crowded. The Esports World Cup Foundation has officially confirmed that CS2 will headline the upcoming Esports Nations Cup, a global tournament set to take place in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, from November 10 to 15. With a massive $1.32 million prize pool and 24 national teams competing on LAN, the event is already shaping up to be one of the most ambitious national-format tournaments in modern Counter-Strike.

Despite its scale, the tournament has sparked debate within the scene due to its classification as a Tier 2 event under Valve’s Regional Standings system. The controversy is boosted by the fact that the Esports Nations Cup directly overlaps with CS2 BLAST Rivals Fall 2026, forcing teams and players to make difficult scheduling decisions during one of the busiest months of the year.

A Return to National Counter-Strike

The Esports Nations Cup is positioned as a spiritual successor to legendary national competitions such as ESWC, WESG, and E-Frag’s World Championships. The core concept is simple but strict. Every team must consist of five players who all share the same citizenship. This immediately shifts the competitive dynamic away from stacked international rosters and toward national identity, talent development, and depth within each country’s player base.

There is also a notable limitation tied to Valve’s ranking ecosystem. If three players from the same organization participate, the team can still earn VRS points. However, no more than three players from any roster ranked on the June 1 VRS list are allowed to compete together. This rule is designed to prevent top-tier teams from entering under a national banner while still preserving competitive integrity.

How Qualification Works

The road to Riyadh is long and highly competitive. The qualification process unfolds across four distinct phases, starting with eligibility. The official June 1 VRS rankings will be used to identify 96 eligible nations. If that number cannot be reached through rankings alone, FACEIT Elo from top players in remaining countries will fill the gaps.

Each of those 96 nations will then host a national qualifier featuring between 32 and 64 teams. These qualifiers follow a single-elimination format, with only one roster earning the right to represent their country at the next stage.

Those 96 national teams are then placed into ten regional qualifiers. These events use a double-elimination format and distribute 24 total slots for the main event. Stronger regions receive more slots, with Western Europe sending four teams, North America three, and smaller regions such as Oceania sending one.

Lan Finals and Tournament Format

The final 24 teams will compete on LAN in Riyadh for a share of over $1 million. The tournament opens with four groups of six teams playing best-of-one round robins. The top four teams from each group advance to the playoffs.

From there, the final 16 enter a single-elimination bracket. All playoff matches are best-of-three, with the grand final escalating to a best-of-five showdown. A third-place match is also scheduled, adding further stakes for teams eliminated before the final.

What This Means for the Wider CS2 Scene

Beyond the prize money, the Esports Nations Cup offers visibility for emerging regions and players who might otherwise struggle for international exposure. For many competitors, strong performances could translate into long-term career opportunities, whether through team signings, sponsorships, or even careers as CS2 boosters or coaches.
