Does Counter-Strike 2 Allow Players to Hand Switch Like CS:GO?
Valve released Counter-Strike 2 in March 22, 2023, marking a transition to Source 2 and bringing significant changes to the timeless classic series that remains, to this day, the peak of first-person shooter games. Although Valve used their new engine to boost CS:GO into a new, more polished game, players noticed the absence of hand-switching in Counter Strike 2.
One of the long-debated topics among Counter-Strike fans has been the best weapon position for tactical advantage and enhanced visibility. However, this debate might be over now that we the traditional binds for hand-switching are gone, following the release og CS2.
Data miner Maxim “GabeFollower” Poletaev's exploration of the beta version files revealed that the cl_righthand command was gone. This command was the tool used for hand-switching in CS:GO. This absence has caused discussions since its reveal, with the community bombarding Valve with questions and demanding to know if hand-switching is returning to Counter Strike or not. |

The CS 2 beta did not feature a bind for changing hands, and even back then, players doubted that Valve would add this customizable feature of gameplay to the final version. While the classic command "cl_righthand true/false" was once a part of the game, allowing players to choose their preferred weapon hand, it was temporarily disabled during the beta and eventually removed. Some of Counter-Strike’s biggest names commented on this, and advised Valve to boost the feature, and to allow players to customize their gameplay experience even more by adding, not only the hand-selection, but character customization as well.
Some players tried to find a way to add the “change hands” feature in CS 2 during the beta but no solution was found. The commands "cl_righthand true" and "cl_righthand false" exist in the code but are inactive. Entering these commands in the beta version didn’t work and in the live version, they are currently completely gone.

The community is waiting for an answer from the developers but so far they have nothing but speculation. Some players attribute the removal of hand-switching system to the Source 2 engine and its new features, like the display of players' legs and shadows, potentially complicating hand-switching due to redesigned lighting and shadow systems. The boost to Counter Strike 2’s visual effects, dynamic movements, and bullet trajectories further contributes to the challenges of implementing hand-switching in CS 2. |
In the absence of a direct method to place the left hand in CS 2, players have explored workarounds. Adjusting the viewmodel offset through console commands offers an alternative. Commands such as "viewmodel_offset_z -2," "viewmodel_offset_y -2," and "viewmodel_offset_x -2" can shift the center of the map, aiding navigation. While this doesn't fully replicate left-hand weapon use, it provides an option for players to adapt to new conditions and minimize spray problems, especially for left-handed people.
As the CS 2 community awaits further updates and potential changes, we can only hope that Valve will bring back hand-switching sooner rather than later. Stay tuned for more CS2 updates!
