ESL Announces 2025 CS2 Pro Tour with $22M Prize Pool and Open Format

The ESL has rolled out the first details of its 2025 Counter Strike 2 (CS2) Pro Tour, setting the stage for a big year in esports. The upcoming events promise over $22 million in prize pools, a figure that shows the company's dedication to boosting the competitive scene for CS2. This investment is designed to attract top teams and players from around the world, making the ESL circuit one of the most highly anticipated competitions of the year.

An Open Circuit for CS2 Tournaments

Starting in 2025, the CS2 pro scene will adopt a more open format, following Valve’s new guidelines. This change is pushing tournament organizers, including ESL, to rethink their formats to stay competitive. The aim is to boost the reach and impact by encouraging the top teams in the world to participate. This year, ESL faces a bit more competition, with organizers like PGL and StarLadder preparing their own events for the new season.

ESL recently updated its website to showcase the 2025 schedule. While there weren’t many surprising announcements, fans were happy to see the return of some old favorites. The IEM Katowice and IEM Cologne events, cornerstones of competitive Counter Strike, are confirmed to make a comeback. Additionally, the ESL Pro League will host both Season 21 and 22, alongside the continuation of the Intel Grand Slam.

2025 Event Schedule

The ESL’s social media channels revealed the schedule for the 2025 Pro Tour. Here are the key dates to mark in your calendar:

ESL Pro Tour 2025 Calendar

  • IEM Katowice 2025: January 29th - February 9th
  • ESL Pro League Season 21: February 25th - March 16th
  • IEM Spring 2025: April 21st - 27th
  • IEM Dallas 2025: May 19th - 25th
  • IEM Cologne 2025: July 23rd - August 3rd
  • ESL Pro League Season 22: September 23rd - October 12th
  • IEM Chengdu 2025: November 3rd - 9th

These dates set the stage for a thrilling season of CS2, where both seasoned teams and rising stars will compete to boost their standings and chase victory.

A New Ranking System for Invitations

All major ESL events, except for IEM Dallas, will use Valve’s Global Rankings as the main source for team invites. However, IEM Dallas will take a different approach, splitting invites between Valve’s ranking system and online qualifiers from different regions. This change is designed to give more opportunities to teams around the globe, boosting accessibility for newer players trying to make their mark.

In addition to changes in the ranking system, the format for matches has been updated. Best-of-one matches are officially out, with Grand Finals now set to be best-of-five, a popular format across other esports like League of Legends and Dota 2. This change is expected to increase the intensity and excitement for fans and players alike.

The Future of ESL Majors

One noticeable omission from the schedule is an ESL-hosted CS2 Major. Although Valve hasn’t announced the official host for the December 2025 Major, it’s looking unlikely that ESL will take on that responsibility. If ESL doesn't host it, 2025 will mark three years without an ESL Major, with the last one being IEM Rio in 2022.

ESL CS2 Pro

That being said, IEM Cologne still holds its place as one of the most prestigious events in CS history, even though it's not technically a Major. Fans and players alike hold it in high regard, and the 2025 edition is expected to continue raising the event's legacy as the most iconic tournament in CS2. Despite the uncertainty surrounding the Major, ESL promises to share more details on prize distribution and additional events as the new season approaches.

The ESL's 2025 Counter Strike 2 Pro Tour offers a packed schedule of exciting events, boosted by an investment of over $22 million. With an open format, revised ranking systems, and the return of iconic tournaments like IEM Katowice and IEM Cologne, the year is shaping up to be thrilling for both fans and competitors. While some may be disappointed by the absence of an ESL-hosted Major, the tour's structure ensures that there's plenty to look forward to in the CS2 scene.
