Apex Legends Season 21: Upheavel Reveals New Legend Alter

The latest trailer for Apex Legends has finally revealed Alter, the enigmatic new Legend set to debut in Season 21. In the episode "Based on a True Story," Alter, a skilled fighter from another dimension, takes center stage, narrating her own tale as an unreliable narrator, highlighting her triumphs while clearly omitting some crucial details.

The current season, Season 20: Breakout, will end in less than a week, and Respawn Entertainment decided to treat players to a sneak peek of what's to come in Season 21. "Stories From the Outlands" introduces Alter's character, providing a glimpse into her backstory and possible motivations for joining the Apex Games.

"Based on a True Story" is narrated by Alter herself and suggests that she originates from a dimension separate from the one inhabited by other Legends, save for Wraith, who shares a similar origin. She’s joining Apex Legends as a dimension-skipping character with a connection to Bloodhound. The episode hints at the mysterious circumstances surrounding Alter's past, including the revelation that her parents lost their lives under suspicious circumstances. However, Alter embraces her status as an enigma, reveling in the ambiguity of her origins and presenting herself as a chaotic character.

The trailer portrays Alter as a highly skilled combatant, implying that she underwent assassin training under the guidance of a clandestine organization. Horn-like antennae protruding from her head and a mechanical arm reminiscent of Doc Ock's appendage boost her cyberpunk tiefling-like physical appearance. While predominantly human in appearance, Alter's voice carries a faintly synthetic tone, akin to that of robotic characters in Apex Legends, such as Ash, Pathfinder, and Revenant.

Despite her reluctance to reveal concrete details about her identity, Alter drops a few hints about her past, referencing a period of her life spent living in a style akin to Bloodhound. Her interactions with her ravens, along with this revelation, highlight some similarities to other Legends in the Apex Games.

Alter's ability to manipulate portals is notable, as evidenced by her entry and exit through shattered glass-like portals. This detail reminded me of Wraith, who similarly traversed dimensions through shattered glass, as depicted in her own episode of "Stories From the Outlands." These similarities hint at a deeper connection between Alter and Wraith, suggesting a shared lineage or origin.

The trailer ends with Alter's cryptic declaration, asserting her presence as a crucial character in the unfolding narrative of Apex Legends. Alter drops a photograph of fellow Legend Horizon and her son, Newton, which leaves players questioning her true motives and allegiances.

While "Based on a True Story" offers some glimpses into Alter's character, many questions remain unanswered. The episode hints at potential connections between Alter and other Legends, including Bloodhound, Wraith, and Horizon, and some conspiracies claim Alter is an artificially created Legend, boosted by other Legends’ powers and abilities, or even their DNA.

The episode showcases Alter's fluency in Cantonese during a conversation, adding another layer to his character and hinting at a deeper cultural background awaiting exploration.

As players await the release of Season 21: Upheaval, Alter's true origins are out there somewhere, and undoubtedly she will play a role in shaping the future of the Apex Games.
