Riot Introduces TrueSkill 2 in League of Legends Season 14 MMR Rework
League of Legends Season 14 is right around the corner, and Riot Games is introducing huge changes to the game, including a reworked Summoner’s Rift Map, tons of gameplay changes, a new set of items along with dozens of reworked items to replace the removed Mythic Items, and now a new MMR system created from scratch using TrueSkill 2.
Over the years, LoL MMR has always been a super complex system, making it extremely hard to boost your League of Legends rank to the right spot to allow you to play with other players of the same skill level. The League community has complained about this situation for ages, and now Riot has finally decided to act.
After admitting that the League of Legends MMR system doesn’t take into account the right data to distribute player ranks appropriately, Riot decided to implement a new system. This is where TrueSkill 2 comes in.
What is TrueSkill 2 for League of Legends?
According to Riot Iksar, TrueSkill 2 for League of Legends is a system created by Riot that will take into account all the relevant metrics to determine a player’s accurate rank.
Riot adopted the TrueSkill 2 system to fix League of Legends' MMR problem by considering stats that the current system ignores. Riot has announced that they will be implementing a new intermediary system that uses some of TrueSkill 2’s metrics during an adaptation period to collect information and adjust TrueSkill 2, making sure they can release its full version later in the year without boosting players’ MMR too much. |
How does TrueSkill 2 work?
With TrueSkill 2, your League MMR will be adjusted, taking into account the following aspects:
- AFKing or leaving: resulting in heavier penalties for leavers and lower penalties for players on the leaver’s team.
- Squads or Premades: playing with a premade will influence how your MMR increases or decreases, taking into account your performance compared to your squadmate’s performance.
- Batch Inference: A system that looks at your previous matches and tries to predict if you will win or lose next, meaning that breaking a loss streak can cause an MMR boost.
- Player statistics: in-game stats collected from your individual performance like KDA, gold per minute, creep score, objective damage and objectives taken, damage dealt, healing done and received, and even damage mitigation.
- Player Experience: If a player has invested more time into the game, it is expected that he will be more experienced. Trueskill 2 factors in the time played by your account when determining your MMR.
With the League of Legends TrueSkill 2 system, Riot Games hopes to finally put an end to the issue of matchmaking that has plagued LoL for over a decade now. It’s good to know that Riot is finally addressing this issue and working to boost the quality of League’s matchmaking.
As Season 14 begins, they will implement the changes to the ranked matchmaking rating system slowly and in small steps to avoid sudden changes that might break the game, but we can all expect the first few weeks of the season to be a wild ride.
The full details about the new MMR system haven’t been revealed yet, but we will be watching Riot like a hawk to keep you up-to-date. Stay tuned for more news and information about League of Legends!
