League of Legends Season 14 Dragon and Mage Item Changes Explained
As League of Legends Season 14 approaches, Riot Games has confirmed all the changes to the traditional Summoner’s Rift map and game mode. This comprehensive guide breaks down all the changes Riot is making to dragons and mage items in Season 14 and what players can expect in the 2024 season.
League of Legends Season 14: Dragon Overhaul
Dragons have been sharing the spotlight in shaping the outcome of League of Legends matches for over a season now, ever since the introduction of the elemental drakes and their respective boosts. However, with a growing focus on the bot side of the map in recent seasons, Riot Games decided to recalibrate the balance between both sides of the map, shaking up the League of Legends gaming experience.
Infernal Drake Rework
The spotlight for League of Legends Season 14 is on the Infernal Dragon, who will be receiving a full rework.
After unlocking the Infernal Rift, players will find Infernal Cinders around the map, much like Bard’s chimes, which provide an adaptive stat boost and a burst of movement speed upon pickup. Keep in mind that a portion of these cinders will be dropped upon a champion's death, which can be picked up by allies and enemies. Riot aims to reward and amplify offensive playstyles and players who roam the map more, but, as counter-intuitive as it may sound, the Infernal Drake will cause more snowballing. |
Ocean and Mountain Rift Changes
After the Infernal Dragon tweaks, Riot plans minor adjustments to Ocean and Mountain Rifts to align with the new map layout, featuring brush and wall changes. It’s very likely that more dragon adjustments will be revealed before Season 14 begins, since Riot is promising a season start loaded with new gameplay mechanics. We’ll just have to wait for the 14.1 preview patch to hit live servers to find out.
Mage Item Changes for Season 14
Say goodbye to Mythic items as the mage itemization is getting a full revamp. With the removal of familiar items like Crown of the Shattered Queen, Everfrost, and more, Season 14 introduces new mage items and adjustments to existing components, boosting the variety of builds in an attempt to bring back mages to the Rift.
The full list of new Mage items includes new items like Malignance, Caster’s Companion, Stormsurge, Haunting Guise, and Cryptbloom, and reworked items including Riftmaker, Liandry’s Torment, Horizon Focus, Seeker’s Armguard, Shadowflame, Cosmic Drive, Amplifying Tome, and Rod of Ages. Riot is still keeping around some of the old items, but they are open to removing or replacing items during the season depending on player feedback since they will be rolling out an average of two patches per month. |
