Riot Announces the League of Legends Season 13 Ranked Rewards
The announcement was dropped today, December 12, and the League of Legends staff has some juicy new content to finish 2023 with a bang and start the new season with the right foot. Let’s take a look at the new skins coming to boost your collection as well as Riot’s new commitment for 2024.
On the last Dev Update of 2023, Riot Brightmoon and Riot Meddler revealed all the secrets about the Season 13's end, happening on January 9, 2024, and opening the doors to Season 14 the very next day, January 10. There's still time to rush and get your dream rank, but the clock is ticking!
The developers revealed that this year’s Three Honors skin, for players who have shown exemplary behavior throughout the year and garnered enough honor points from their teammates to reach League of Legends Honor Level 5, will be awarded to Akshan. As seen here, Three Honors Akshan features the same color set and features as the previous skin, Three Honors Malzahar, with an added bonus: Three Honors Akshan has a hood that will, we assume, be removable with the toggle function in-game. |
The last dev blog of the year also features the biggest mic drop in 2023: the League of Legends Season 13 Victorious skin, Victorious Tryndamere. The developers explained that Riot doesn’t want to make the same mistake they did with Syndra or Samira and release a skin before it’s considered prime for gaming in the Rift, so Victorious Tryndamere will be awarded to players in late February. |
The “Crit King,” a.k.a. Trynda, has been a staple of League of Legends for over a decade now, and Riot felt like he was being left out. It’s appropriate that Riot assigns this year’s victorious skin to a “legacy” champion in the year when they showed the most commitment to returning to League’s roots and boosting the game with features that fans want instead of monetizing everything.
Speaking of monetization, Riot Pupulasers (League’s Game Director) and Just a Capybara (League’s Head of Business and Insights) addressed the Breakout True Damage Ekko skin and how the new monetization system has affected the game and community overall. Capybara wanted to ensure that Riot’s thoughts and strategy to monetize their games were clear to the community. There’s no point in pretending like Riot isn’t a business with the intent to generate profit, after all.
Pupulasers explained that while League wants to keep their monetization locked to cosmetics, keeping the idea that “you can be the best player in the world without spending a single dollar” alive, they still want to correctly direct the funds from aesthetic content to Lol Esports, League of Legends music, and new features for players. Riot believes that some features of the game should not be available to purchase, so they will be keeping and investing more into rewards that you can earn instead of buying, but the opposite will also happen, and Riot will boost their “pay-wall” protected content as well, for players who do enjoy that kind of exclusivity.
Riot Brightmoon finished the video on an incredibly shocking note by announcing that he will be leaving the position of Lead Producer after his outstanding eight-year road. Brightmoon has been one of the cornerstones behind League of Legends as we know it, and he’ll always be fondly remembered as one of the most loved members of Riot’s staff.
Riot’s new-year resolution to focus on what the players want from the game was already confirmed, with Meddler’s confirmation of a reworked Summoner’s Rift map leaving a huge smile on the community’s face.
