Riot Games Reveals MMO Design and Gameplay Details

Riot Games has been massively successful since the release of League of Legends 15 years ago. The billion-dollar gaming company has recently expanded to the first-person shooter genre with Valorant, which was awarded the highest honors in gaming awards in 2023. Along with Valorant, Riot has released TFT, Arcane on Netflix, Legends of Runeterra (a direct competitor to Blizzard’s Hearthstone), and they recently announced 2XKO, a new fighting game set in the League of Legends universe.

As Riot Games’ continues to boost its growth in the gaming world, the developers behind League of Legends are now creating a Massive Multiplayer Online game set in Runeterra, LoL’s original world. This new project has received huge investments from the company, and it’s promising to revolutionize the MMO genre. If the Riot MMO has a fraction of the success their other titles have had so far, we can expect this game to rival MMO titans like World of Warcraft, Final Fantasy XIV, and Lost Ark.

When will the League of Legends MMO be released?

While rumors aim at a release window that can span from late 2025 to the end of 2026, Riot Games themselves haven’t released any information about the potential release of the League of Legends MMO game. We do know, however, that this MMO has been in development for a few years now, and these projects usually don’t go over the five-year mark.

Will the League of Legends MMO be free-to-play?

The development team behind Riot’s new MMO, previously led by Greg Street, has hinted at this new project following Riot’s format of keeping their multiplayer games free-to-play and selling only cosmetics to avoid "whales,"  a common term used in multiplayer gaming communities to identify players who boost their in-game progress by using money instead of actually learning and spending time playing the game. This format has helped cement League of Legends, Valorant, TFT, and Wild Rift as landmarks of competitive online gaming.

Greg Street also explained that while “pay-to-win” mechanics are not in Riot’s plans, there was no confirmation on whether the game was free-to-play or subscription-based. Previous comments from the developer alluded to his dislike for subscription-based models, as they force players to stay in the game just to avoid wasting money.

There’s a very high chance that the new Riot MMO will be free-to-play, but since Greg Street left the team in March 2023, it’s not guaranteed that his guidelines will remain, even though he claimed to trust the development team to keep rowing in the same direction.

Riot Games Revealed New Details about the League of Legends MMO

Although Riot has avoided revealing any information about Project F, the new LoL MMO, at all costs, they did invite Necrit, a famous YouTuber and content creator inspired by Riot’s lore and games, to interview the developers behind the MMO, and they allowed him to disclose some details regarding the game’s development.

Riot MMO Leak

Necrit revealed right off the bat that the League of Legends MMO devs have not decided on the game’s faction system.

While they do like the idea of having lore-based factions, which help foster conflict and advance any game’s plot, they are unsure of the path they want the game to lead players in that regard for now.

Looking at the MMORPG market, it’s easy to see that most MMOs out there try to mimic World of Warcraft, and while the devs recognize that WoW is an unavoidable reference and source of inspiration, they are aiming at expanding the genre with new, unexplored formats and mechanics.

How big will the League of Legends MMORPG be?

So far, Riot devs have not disclosed any details about the size of the map or the game’s length. Most players speculate about whether it will be an open-world game or divided into zones, but nothing has been confirmed so far.

What we do know is that the art we’re used to seeing in Arcane, League of Legends, and especially in Legends of Runeterra will be used in the LoL MMORPG. This is one of the most satisfying news stories for the Riot Games player community, which has long praised the several games’ visuals.
