LoL Arena 2025: The Grand Reckoning Updates and Best Champions
The popular rotating game mode, Arena, is making a highly anticipated return in League of Legends patch 25.05. While the core gameplay remains the same, Riot Games is introducing several major updates, including new mechanics, map changes, and a revamped progression system. These changes aim to boost engagement and refine the experience based on community feedback.
Now rebranded as Arena – The Grand Reckoning, this iteration of the mode brings fresh content while maintaining its fast-paced, 2v2v2v2 structure. Here’s everything you need to know about the latest updates, including the best champions to play in 2025.
What Is Arena: The Grand Reckoning?
Arena is a 16-player game mode in LoL, where players compete in pairs against other duos in multiple rounds. Each team fights to reduce the opposing teams’ health bars until only one duo remains standing.
Throughout the match, players select from a pool of augments, similar to Teamfight Tactics (TFT), allowing for adaptable strategies. The game mode also includes a unique progression system where players earn Fame based on their in-game performance. Accumulating Fame unlocks in-game perks, additional augments, and more rewards.
Changes in Arena – The Grand Reckoning
While the overall gameplay structure remains intact, Riot has introduced significant modifications to refine the Arena experience. Here are the most notable updates:
1. Map & Location Adjustments
Previous versions of Arena took place on the Rings of Wrath map, but in The Grand Reckoning, maps have been grounded instead of floating.
Community feedback has led to updates on existing maps, enhancing balance and playability.
2. Guests of Honor Mechanic Cameos from previous seasons have been removed and replaced with Guests of Honor. At different event rounds, all players vote on a champion, and the chosen Guest of Honor introduces a new gameplay rule for the remainder of the match. Up to two Guests can appear in a single game if teams progress far enough. |

3. New Progression System: Fame & Unlocks
The Fame system is now the primary way to progress in Arena. Players gain Fame based on their in-game performance, with additional boosts from completing missions for specific champions. The more Fame you collect, the more in-game perks you unlock.
Arena Level Rewards
- Level 1: Unlocks Overflow (Silver Augment)
- Level 2: Unlocks Hattrick (Gold Augment)
- Level 3: Improves Matchup Intro
- Level 4: Unlocks Slow and Steady (Gold Augment)
- Level 5: Grants 1 Reroll
- Level 6: Improves Matchup Intro
- Level 7: Unlocks And My Axe (Gold Augment)
- Level 8: Unlocks Transmute: Chaos (Prismatic Augment)
- Level 9: Further improves Matchup Intro
Additionally, new intro cards have been introduced for matchups. Similar to Summoner’s Rift’s loading screen, players can unlock and upgrade borders for these intro cards by earning Fame, allowing them to show off their rank and Arena progress.
4. Other Notable Changes
- Champion Mastery can now be earned while playing Arena.
- Arena will feature missions tied to the battle pass.
- The Arena God Challenge will retain progress from previous seasons, so returning players won’t need to grind from scratch.
- Gladiator Points & Ranks have been removed due to low player engagement, with the Fame system now serving as the main progression metric.
How Long Will Arena – The Grand Reckoning Be Available?
Arena – The Grand Reckoning will be playable from March 5, 2025, to April 29, 2025. Riot has not confirmed if or when the mode will return after this period, so LoL players should jump in while it’s available.
Best Champions for Arena 2025
Choosing the right champion is crucial for boosting your rank in Arena. The best champions are determined by their win percentage in the top four placements, based on data from Blitz.
- Top 3 Champions in Arena 2025
- Ziggs – 62.9% win rate
