Every few months, Riot publishes the LoL Champion Roadmap.
The roadmap provides fresh information on new League of Legends champions, reworks, and a wide range of other features that Riot is developing.
A lot of fascinating things are happening: Riot is adding new champions in 2023, making new changes to a lot of items, and nerfing and boosting the power of some champions who stray too far off the average win rate percentages.
But today, we're focusing on the new champion, Briar! 2023 has been a great year for Riot so far, and the new champions that have been released have managed to escape the infamous "200 years" curse and show that Riot hears what the community has to say and is willing to be better.
Although the precise number of new League of Legends champions for 2023 has not yet been disclosed, we think that this year we should see up to five new champions being released. So far, we've seen Millio and Naafiri.
Riot has not officially confirmed this, so we are only speculating, but during the last few years, Riot has released four to five champions every year, and given the frequency of Mid-Scope changes and other updates, this number appears likely to remain stable.
When creating Naafiri, the design team under the direction of August Browning realized that a hungry creature would fit a diver like Warwick even more than an assassin, but they wanted to create something unique that still fit Runeterra's lore. That's when August came up with the idea of Briar, the Vampire.
New League of Legends Champion Designs and Visuals are coming!
Jax is one of the most popular champions in League of Legends, and Riot just gave him a boost with a brand-new, sparkly ultimate, but his appearance hasn't held up so well over the years. Riot has taken note of this and has added an Artwork and Sustainability Update to him. You might be familiar with ASUs from champions like Ahri and Caitlyn, and Riot has already revealed plans to do it again for champions with outdated models but generally reliable kits.
Riot's design team wants to emphasize his traditional Icathian weapon while not providing him with a "real" weapon. This is supposed to reveal his emotional attachment to his homeland of Icathia, now taken by the Void.
Although we have not been given a precise release date prediction, Jax's ASU is likely to enter the rift before winter. If you're excited about Jax, then get ready for the real big reveal! The release of two more ASUs has already been announced for 2024! The first part of the year will see Lee Sin receive his ASU, with Teemo following in the second half.
The Skarner VGU will go live, according to Riot, in early 2024. It is tough to know if it is a firm estimate or simply a best guess because there is still a lot of work to be done on his gear, as Riot wants to boost the champion's popularity, and we've had this same VGU announced before, only to have it postponed.
New League of Legends Champions for 2024!
Also being developed is a new mid-lane mage. Riot is resurrecting some earlier concepts that they were unable to use in a champion before. They intended to make a champion a few years ago who could actually draw or paint their skills.
The new male champion hails from Ionia. Riot says his aesthetic will be vibrant but dark at the same time, which sounds like an oxymoron but also a bit like Viego, Sylas, or Jhin.
According to various leaks and rumors, Riot will also create a champion from the Freljord. Most likely, this would be a top-lane huntress.
The last addition is rumored to be Xayah and Rakan's baby. The duo is bringing us a new ADC that is almost "hatching".
League of Legends is getting a lot of new content by the day; stay tuned to see what comes next.
