Marvel Rivals is the first game to receive its own dedicated store page inside its official Discord server. From this page, users can browse skins, buy cosmetics, add items to a wishlist, or send gifts directly to friends. The experience is built to mirror a traditional in-game shop but with the convenience of Discord’s existing social network layered on top.

The wishlist feature is especially central to Discord’s strategy. Items players add to their wishlist appear on their public profile, giving friends an easy way to browse potential gifts. According to Discord cofounder Stan Vishnevskiy, that social connection is where the biggest opportunity lies. Gifting already makes up a significant part of Discord’s existing cosmetic sales, spiking to more than 30 percent during holidays. Bringing that behaviour into gaming commerce was the next logical step.

For Discord, this isn’t just a store. It’s a chance to let players show generosity in a way that directly benefits their friends and favourite games. For developers, it introduces a new revenue stream that reaches beyond their current player base.

Discord is Making Gifting Easier Across Games

One of the biggest hurdles in gaming commerce is gifting across titles. Buying something for yourself is simple, but sending an item to someone who plays a game you don’t often becomes a puzzle of logins, game accounts, and payment systems. In some games, gifting simply isn’t possible at all unless you already play.

Marvel Rivals was the obvious starting point for the feature. With more than 4 million members in its Discord server, the game has one of the most active communities on the platform. Frequent events, discussion channels, and content drops already drive players to Discord daily, making it a natural environment for a built-in shop.

The feature is currently limited to the desktop app and uses US currency, but expansions to mobile and console platforms are already being explored. Given how much gaming activity happens on mobile today, a broader rollout seems inevitable.

Going Beyond AAA Titles

Although Marvel Rivals is the debut partner, Discord has made it clear that this program won’t be reserved for blockbuster releases. Earlier this year, the company pushed out its social SDK, allowing games of all sizes to integrate Discord features directly into their titles. The in-app shop is expected to follow the same path, eventually opening up to indie studios and mid-size developers who to boost the visibility of their titles and create a simplified store.

For smaller teams, this could be a significant advantage. Discoverability is a constant challenge, and being able to position cosmetics inside a community hub where players already spend time could help bridge that gap, specially for titles with online ranked queues where boosting and duo queueing are possible.

In an industry where many platforms try to keep players glued to their ecosystem at all costs, Discord insists this isn’t a retention tactic. Instead, the company frames the feature as a natural extension of how players already mingle, celebrate birthdays, share hype, and talk about their favourite games.

The shop simply offers an extra step in those interactions. If you know your friend loves a specific character in Marvel Rivals, you can now send a cosmetic straight through Discord without friction.
