Apex Legends Players Outraged by Final Fantasy Event Prices
Respawn Entertainment and Square Enix banded together to create a crossover event between Apex Legends and Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth. While Apex Legends enthusiasts were initially thrilled about the unexpected collaboration, with Final Fantasy 7 cosmetics boosting the store and taking the Apex Games by storm, the reveal of the pricing structure for the event items has caused the Apex Legends community to go berserk on social media. The criticism centers on the introduction of event packs as the primary means to acquire exclusive skins, with some players estimating a steep cost of over $300 to collect all the offerings.
The Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth event, announced at the 2023 Game Awards, promised an array of cosmetic items, including FF VII themed Legends skins, weapons skins, and a unique One Winger Angel Death Box. However, the twist Respawn and Square Enix tried to pull off already caused a stir due to the quality of the skins and now, the prices. Unlike previous events, where purchasing all event items guaranteed a collection Heirloom, the Buster Sword R2R5 heirloom relies on obtaining the prized item through sheer luck in Event pack drops. The big issue here is that you only get a mere 1% chance of unboxing it. |
Players, armed with calculators and a bit of statistical know-how, took to the Apex Legends subreddit to share their findings. The probability of pulling the Mythic Buster Sword, even after purchasing 30 packs, stands at a shocking 3.4%. This number has caused heavy outrage among players who feel that the odds are unfairly stacked against them and feel that Respawn needs to boost these numbers if they want people to buy loot boxes.
To reach a near-guarantee level of obtaining the exclusive Buster Sword R2R5 Heirloom, players are confronted with the prospect of paying a substantial amount of money, exceeding the $300 mark. Famous Apex Legends YouTuber Macro weighed in on the matter, warning players against endorsing what he considers "ridiculous practices." He emphasized that supporting these pricing models would justify Respawn not addressing the underlying issues within Apex Legends. |
Macro's opinion was well received, with many players who shared his concerns about the direction of in-game events becoming increasingly overpriced.
On the Apex subreddit, a crowd of players are sharing Macro’s idea and asking other players to avoid this event and reconsider investing in the Event Packs. The community's idea is to use this boycott strategy until Respawn slows down their monetization tactics and makes changes to what players consider unfair and exploitative pricing strategies.
Even with all the controversy surrounding it and the Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth event inadvertently becoming a beacon for discussions surrounding the long-standing issue of microtransactions, pricing transparency, and in-game purchases, the live event is going live in just a couple of days. Only time will tell how Apex Legends developers, Respawn, respond to the community's complaints and whether this event sparks a shift in the industry's approach to pricing exclusive in-game content.
