Worlds 2023 Swiss Stage – Day 1: The Road to the Title of Champion!
The League of Legends Worlds 2023 Swiss Stage has begun, and the home teams are already making their mark! It's all about THE GRIND, THE GLORY! Here are the highlights from the matches on Day 1.
T1 vs. Team Liquid Honda
Despite the LCS experiencing some rough patches this year, TL made sure to prove they wouldn't be left behind. As T1 made play after play, TL followed up every single time, not letting go of a single inch of advantage, even securing two Baron buffs to boost their stats. However, one critical teamfight proved enough for T1 to push the entire base in a desperate move to turn the game around. Kudos to TL Pyosik, who showcased the strength of the LCS.
Cloud9 vs. Mad Lions
The second match of the day was significantly more chaotic, with Cloud 9 slowly and methodically building a gold advantage until MAD could only defend their base. C9 Blaber excelled in the jungle, leading Cloud 9 to a decisive victory.
GEN.G vs. GAM Esports
The underdogs from Vietnam put on an impressive show against the legendary Gen G. Unfortunately for them, the Korean squad's experience shone through on the Worlds stage. It truly was the junglers' day as GEN Peanut, with a very fed Vi, tore through GAM Esports, securing a victory for GEN G.
Team BDS vs. Beijing JDG Intel Esports Club
Europe can be proud today as the fourth seed from the LEC outperformed the favorites JDG, with BDS Adam displaying his "spin-to-win" skills as Garen. However, playing a champion where you're skilled isn't always enough, and JDG had to put in effort to turn the game around and avoid a shocking loss. JDG ended up taking the win after an easy Baron.
G2 Esports vs. Dplus Kia
The former World Champions DK entered this match expecting a guaranteed win, but G2 were the only "showmakers" that day, completely dominating the Korean squad in the early game. A Baron steal by DK created an opportunity for a turnaround, but the European squad still had much to give, with G2 Caps pulling off unexpected plays. After 42 long minutes, G2 managed to secure a Drake Soul, an Elder Drake, and the Baron buff, and with these three buffs boosting their stats, they ended the game.
WeiboGaming FAW AUDI vs. NRG
With a level two tower dive, WBG started collecting kills and had no intention of stopping. WBG Xiaohu demonstrated that Azir can be overpowered in the early game, causing towers to fall rapidly. By the 30-minute mark, NRG had run out of energy, and WBG defeated the LCS champions.
Suzhou LNG Esports vs. Fnatic
LNG employed a traditional LPL strategy, maintaining an aggressive stance and looking for mistakes from Fnatic at every turn. The Chinese mid-laner, LNG Scout, became incredibly fed as Azir, ending the game with an impressive 11/0/7 score.
Bilibili Gaming Pingan Bank vs. KT Rolster
KT clearly had more experience on the international stage, but BLG didn't secure the LPL's 2nd seed by accident. Day 1 ended with an epic game as every player performed at their absolute best. BLG vs. KT was a masterclass in teamfighting, and it could easily have gone either way. Every objective was contested right up to the very last second. BLG secured the Hextech Dragon Soul at 40 minutes and a Baron buff at 44.
For those of you who took a long shot in your Pick'Em, congratulations, you just got a point boost, the game concluded after 45 minutes, with BLG emerging victorious. If there's one match you should watch and re-watch, it's this one!
Our Swiss Stage Day 1 MVP is LNG Scout, who shone as Azir.
