Worlds 2023 Play-Ins – Day 2: A World Record is not enough!

The second day of the League of Legends Worlds 2023 Play-Ins brought with it high stakes, record-breaking plays, and nail-biting matches. As the battles raged on, it was clear that this year's competition will not be easily forgotten.

DetonatioN FocusMe vs. CFO Flying Oyster

Day 2 kicked off with a clash between DetonatioN FocusMe (DFM) and CFO Flying Oyster (CFO). Unconventional bans and picks set the stage, as Poppy and Kai’Sa remained unbanned and unpicked, leaving the playing field wide open for innovation.

CFO boldly embraced a "Solo Queue" composition, designed to dominate every lane during the early game. DFM's bot lane, featuring Yutapon on Senna and Harp with Maokai, took a unique approach that didn't pan out as expected, rendering their late-game impact limited.

The game's turning point came when Jimien, playing Jayce in the mid lane for CFO, displayed how dominating his presence can be, cashing in a quadra kill. With a 10/4/6 KDA, Jimien carried his team to victory. Despite DFM's map control and midlane prowess, they couldn't fully capitalize on their early gold lead, ultimately falling to CFO's well-executed strategies.

Game two witnessed the classic Kai’Sa versus Xayah botlane showdown, where CFO's Shunn showcased why Kai’Sa is often considered a "pick-or-ban" AD carry. The match turned into a one-sided affair as CFO controlled the map from the outset, focusing on boosting Kai’Sa's power. Shunn's performance was nothing short of remarkable, eventually carrying the team to victory. In the late game, Shunn's Kai’Sa was so overfed that DFM could only watch in despair as he broke the base and obliterated their Nexus, securing a convincing 2-0 win for CFO.

Team BDS vs. Team Whales

Fresh from their dominant victory over the Golden Guardians in the Worlds Qualifying Series final, Team BDS faced Team Whales. As expected, Poppy was banned once more, but the Kai’Sa-Renekton combo was left open for Team Whales to seize.

Team BDS's top laner, Adam, showcased the power of Darius by breaking the GD@14 Worlds record with a 3300 Gold advantage over his counterpart. He ended up collecting an astonishing six kills before the 15-minute mark.

The game's climax arrived at 20:30, as BDS executed a flawless team fight at the Baron pit, eliminating the entire Team Whales roster and seizing the Baron buff to solidify their dominance.

In the second match, Team BDS displayed their versatility, with Adam choosing Renekton and securing early kills against Team Whales' top and mid laners. Despite Team Whales' valiant efforts, they struggled to thwart BDS, as BDS Sheo on Rell executed a Drake steal, increasing their early advantage.

The tide turned at 24 minutes when Team Whales' support, Bie, initiated a game-changing engage that set the stage for TW BeanJ's Viego to deliver a devastating blow, nuking Rell and using her form to CC-lock the entire enemy team, allowing for his carries to delete them and securing their victory. The game showcased BeanJ's remarkable individual skill and proved the VCS really is to be feared.

In a final clash, Team Whales managed to overcome BDS, securing the win and leaving spectators in awe after one of the most prolonged and exhilarating matches in Worlds history.

The day culminated in a riveting third game, right away, Kai’Sa and Viego were banned from the draft as Team BDS refused to confront the formidable combo that had bested them in the previous match.

The early game resembled old-school matchups, with a focus on farming rather than kills or turret takedowns. Just before the 20-minute mark, the first team fight unfolded in the mid lane, resulting in a decisive win for Team Whales. Despite this, BDS managed to secure a sneaky drake while Team Whales reset.

Team Whales for Worlds 2023

As both teams returned to farming and clearing the jungle, Team Whales maintained control, gradually choking BDS's gold sources.

A pivotal moment came at the Baron pit, where Team Whales managed to seize the opportunity in a teamfight, while BDS scattered, unsure on if they should commit or back down.

TW secured the Baron, Dragon soul, and a significant gold advantage, sealing their path to victory.

The match pushed beyond expectations, resulting in a captivating showdown that ultimately ended in Team Whales' favor, marking one of the longest and most thrilling matches of the tournament.

Day 2 of the Worlds 2023 Play-Ins delivered a spectacular display of League of Legends competitive gaming. For those who missed the matches, the replays are a must-watch to experience the intensity firsthand.
