Riot Games Addresses the Backlash from the Wintblessed Event Pass
League of Legends players are no strangers to in-game events, and the recent changes to the Winterblessed event pass have caused quite a stir within the community. Riot has faced backlash for what players perceive as a reduction in valuable rewards on the paid track. In response, Riot's experience designer, Jordan 'BarackProbama' Checkman, took to Reddit to address the concerns and shed light on the intentions behind the changes.
The Winterblessed event pass initially caused an excitement boost in the community, offering a pathway for players to earn various in-game rewards, including skins and loot. However, the community's enthusiasm turned into disappointment as Riot implemented changes, particularly the removal of the grab bag at level 30 and orange essence at level 46. |
These changes were met with criticism, with players interpreting them as a "nerf" to the pass, diminishing its overall value.
Checkman responded to the backlash, defending Riot's decision and providing insights into the design choices. He acknowledged the disappointment that players had expressed but made clear Riot's commitment to experimentation and openness to player feedback.
In his Reddit post, Checkman emphasized Riot's attempt to offer more event-themed rewards while reducing the prominence of currencies and loot items. The reason behind this approach is to create a pass with stronger theming, assuming it would be more rewarding for the player base. He stated, "I wouldn’t call it a nerf though, more of a value transfer."
The emphasis on banners over grab bags was a key aspect of Riot's response. Checkman revealed that past player behavior had shown a significant boost in the number of players searching for new banners, influencing the decision to experiment with the distribution of these cosmetic items. The intention was not to devalue the pass but to explore variations based on the player community's preferences.
The boiling point was when players questioned the equivalence of banners to the highly anticipated grab bags. Checkman responded to the criticism, stating, "I guess the part I’m not fully in agreement with is that they are not a reward themselves." He clarified that Riot typically values a known cosmetic more highly than an unknown one, and there's a rough value attached to most items on the passes. |
In Riot’s view, they are boosting an item’s value by making it available only in the pass instead of in random drops.
The controversy highlighted the diversity in player preferences and perceptions of value. Players engaged in discussions, expressing their disagreement with the shift and debating the perceived worth of different in-game items. The dialogue between Riot and the player base underscored the intricacies involved in balancing the desires of a diverse gaming community.
Riot's acknowledgment of the community’s voice and their commitment to learning from community feedback suggest that adjustments to the event pass system might be on the schedule, but so far there is no confirmation.
The Winterblessed event pass controversy only reflects the delicate balance Riot has a hard time maintaining when introducing changes to in-game features.
The Winterblessed Season Pass will launch on December 6, as will the new Mythic Shop rotation. Stay tuned for more information!
