TSM Bids Farewell to LCS: Shopify Rebellion Takes the Helm

In a surprising twist of events, TSM, a giant in the North American esports realm and a seven-time champion in the League of Legends Championship Series (LCS), recently made headlines by announcing the sale of its coveted spot in the league to Shopify Rebellion. This development signals the end of an era for TSM, a team that has been an LCS powerhouse since its inception back in 2013.

TSM's journey in League of Legends has been nothing short of legendary, with the team winning the championship trophy seven times between 2013 and 2020 and boosting the NA region’s honor in the international stages for years. Their legacy began even earlier, as they were part of the inaugural World Championships in 2011 and maintained a consistent presence in subsequent global showdowns.

However, recent seasons have brought about challenges for TSM. Andy "Reginald" Dinh, the organization's founder and a frequently contentious figure who has been involved in harassment incidents within the club, had been making hints that they intended to leave the LCS.

The LCS spot has now found a new home with Shopify Rebellion, reportedly exchanging hands for a sum of approximately ten million dollars. This may seem like a relatively modest amount, especially when compared to the cost of entry into the closed league back in 2018.

However, several factors have contributed to this seemingly low figure, including the precarious economic landscape of esports, the struggle to establish stable business models (particularly in the LCS), a limited pool of potential buyers, and TSM's own eagerness to exit the Championship.

What’s next for TSM?

Despite leaving the LCS, TSM isn't bidding farewell to League of Legends as a whole. Reports suggest that the organization has ambitious plans to set up shop in either China or South Korea, two regions brimming with opportunities in the esports universe.

As for the newcomers, Shopify Rebellion, this relatively fresh organization has been on an impressive expansion spree, diving into various competitive scenes such as Dota 2, Valorant, and Rocket League, and they’re now looking to boost their presence in the MOBA universe with a League of Legends team.

Spearheaded by German entrepreneur Tobias Lütke, who also serves as the CEO of Shopify and happens to be a fervent esports enthusiast, and with Dario "TLO" Wünsch, a former professional Starcraft II player, as the sports director, Shopify Rebellion is poised for substantial growth in the esports sphere.

The collaboration between TSM's successor and another organization named Moist has also stirred up intrigue, particularly in the world of Valorant. Moist brings to the table the star power of popular YouTubers and streamers Charles "Cr1TiKaL" White Jr. and Ludwig "Ludwig" Ahgren, while Shopify Rebellion brings a healthy dose of financial stability through its thriving e-commerce ventures.

Currently, the partnership is primarily focused on Valorant, but given the lofty ambitions of both parties, an eventual expansion to include League of Legends is not out of the question.

The esports landscape is ever-evolving, and TSM's departure from the LCS is a testament to the shifting tides within the industry. As they explore new horizons in China or South Korea and Shopify Rebellion sets its sights on conquering the LCS throne, the future of North American esports remains exciting and uncertain.

Only time will tell how these changes will shape the competitive gaming scene, but one thing is for sure: the world of LoL esports is as dynamic as ever, and we'll be here to witness it all.
