Players are losing huge amounts of LP in League of Legends Season 14
2024 League of Legends is an absolute miracle, with Riot Games reworking some of the most requested features. The changes to the ranked ladder in Season 14, however, are raising a few eyebrows. If you've felt the sting of losing a big chunk of LP, well, get ready for this—Rit's saying it's "normal." Just a part of their grand design.
League of Legends, the virtual haven for tens of thousands of people, has always been a source of joy, or at the very least, angry enjoyment and competition. However, the ranked aspect—oh, it's been the bane of the gaming community’s existence. Season 13 made us consider if elo boosting is the only viable way to get out of elo hell. We all still have fresh memories of getting a single defeat and wiping away the hard-earned LP of more than a few wins early in the season, and the absolute despair of getting an afk five minutes into the match and knowing you were doomed. Fast forward to the initiation of our climb in Season 14, and the first losses start shooting players down like it’s open season. Riot's response? The LP fluctuations are "normal."
Emerald, the mid-tier echelon of League of Legends' ranking hierarchy, has become the epicenter of this issue. Even with stellar win rates and commendable gameplay, some players find themselves on the receiving end of huge LP deductions after a loss. The result? A plateau in progression or, in more unfortunate cases, a fall through the ranks despite putting up a great fight and even carrying hard in some games. |
This is where 'Kara,' a player showcasing an incredible 71% win rate, comes in. Despite this achievement, their LP balance is also a victim of this problem—a mere 19 LP boost gained for a victory against a hefty 21 LP loss after a defeat. Bringing this concern to the attention of Matt 'Phroxzon' Leung-Harrison, lead gameplay designer for League of Legends, led to a response calling this ratio "pretty normal."
Insight from the LP oracle suggests that Season 14's LP gains in the Emerald+ bracket revolve around +-20. For those dwelling below Emerald, the stakes are higher, oscillating around +/-28 (with time revealing if this is a sustainable pattern). Encountering short spurts of +19/-21 or +21/-19 in Emerald+? Well, that's deemed normal for the rank, especially after Riot’s changes to the size of the rank.
The community asked what the logic was behind an account that boasts more victories than losses, facing negative gains—even if for brief periods. It's a valid concern. Leung-Harrison attempts to demystify the situation, attributing negative LP gains to the dynamics of tier boundaries. Consider a player going 30-0; their score suggests they've outgrown their current rank. As the matchmaking system boosts the challenge, losses prompt a recalibration of growth, often resulting in negative LP gains. |
The LP system, especially in the realm of League of Legends patch 14.1, has left most players feeling somewhat robbed of their fair LP earnings. Here's to hoping that Riot fixes this issue soon so we can all start climbing ranks when we win streak, instead of getting demoted. Stay tuned for more League of Legends news!
