LoL Game Director Pupulasers Confirms New Future for League of Legends
Riot Pupulasers, the Game Director of League of Legends, recently took stock of the past year under his leadership and offered a glimpse into the game's future, teasing that huge changes are coming to League in 2025.
2023 has been a rollercoaster for League of Legends, witnessing both triumphs and challenges, particularly in its esports scene, with the LCS’s near collapse, the cosmetics, like the “$200 Skins," and the Season 13 opening cinematic. While unlucky number 13 might have been a challenge for Riot, Pupulasers has already proved that he’s exactly the boost that they need to bring League of Legends back.
Hwei’s release and League of Legends Worlds 2023 were smash hits, and the introduction of the Arena mode has given a new life to the “RGM” game formats. However, it hasn't been without its setbacks, with a developer openly acknowledging Zeri as a failure and some questionable monetization strategies causing some dissatisfaction.
We really have to put the spotlight on Worlds 2023, which shattered viewership records, unfolding one of League's most captivating stories, with Faker and T1 coming back from the bottom for a last time to take back their rightful place as World Champions, only to later announce that they will continue together for one more year. However, the North American scene faced a decline in viewership, and the LCS let go of two entire teams, with EG's controversial exit creating waves in the league and the legendary TSM fading to black.
Reflecting on this eventful year, Riot's Game Director, Pupulasers, expressed that he has gathered invaluable insights during his tenure. Now that he’s the lead Game Developer, he revealed the ten commandments that will boost League of Legends through a new era. As posted on his Twitter (X) account:
“1. We should chase legendary dreams rather than perfect what we know
2. Fun over fair, change over inertia, journey before destination
3. Our players are very different from each other, and grow more so each year
4. No matter how skilled, or how grumpy, everyone loves to be surprised and delighted
5. Current plans are just noise without a long term vision. A vision can’t be realized without succeeding now.
6. Rioters care more than players think. Players care more than we can fathom. Every time I attend an event, this is reinforced.
7. Rioters are legit scared of letting players down. This is both good and bad, and is reinforced by social media.
8. We need to build our game’s roadmap priorities around what players will FEEL. Logic is secondary to visceral emotions.
9. Players want to feel seen and heard. Rioters want to feel valued and respected.
10. 2024 will have something for everyone. 2025 will change League forever.”
Riot Pupulaser’s New Vision for League of Legends
League of Legends, a landmark in the gaming industry, has maintained its relevance over more than a decade.
The game has thrived over the years, a phenomenon which can be attributed to its constant evolution, with regular patches introducing new mechanics and interactions among its diverse cast of characters. However, Pupulasers aknowledged League's aging infrastructure, plagued by recurring game-breaking bugs and an aging client, needed to be addressed. While details about the void-themed rift change slated for 2024 have surfaced, the real surprise lies in Pupulasers' proclamation that League will change "forever" in 2025. |
This statement has stirred considerable speculation within the player community. Liu's commitment to "chase legendary dreams rather than perfect what we know" ended up boosting everyone’s expectations, leading the community to believe Riot might shed away the old League to create League of Legends 2 using a new engine.
As we anticipate the revelation of what Pupulasers and Riot have in store for us in 2025, the question lingers: Can League of Legends fulfill the expectations set by its director and catch that “Legendary Dream”? Stay tuned to find out!
