In Needham’s announcement, Riot acknowledges the growing presence of esports betting across its competitive titles. According to Needham, roughly 70% of global sports bets are placed through unregulated markets. Riot’s new policy aims to bring some of that activity into the light, hoping that regulation can help protect the integrity of esports while boosting financial opportunities for teams.

“We believe it’s better to engage in allowing betting sponsorships—thoughtfully, carefully, and with the right protections—than to sit on the sidelines,” Needham explained.

From Riot’s perspective, this is about strengthening the economic backbone of its esports ecosystem. Many League of Legends and Valorant teams have reportedly pushed for this move to open new revenue streams.
