Apex Legends Fans Left Wanting After Kill Code: Part 4 Disappoints
Respawn Entertainment is known for gracing the Apex Legends community with some amazing cinematics that give us fresh lore about our favorite Legends. Kill Code, their most recent production, aimed to boost excitement for the new season of the Apex Games.
The narrative lead, Ashley Reed, set high expectations by hinting at shattered relationships and the possibility of not everyone making it out alive. Now that the dust has settled on the Kill Code storyline, it's time to evaluate whether Apex Legends lived up to the promise or fell short.
Reed's words about relationships being "tested and shattered" made perfect sense as we witnessed the tumultuous dynamics between Loba and Valkyrie over the last couple of episodes. The animated series took us into their strained relationship, with Valkyrie's betrayal in the third part leading to an apparent breaking point. However, the Kill Code Finale hinted that there are still some feelings flowing around, as Valkyrie risked everything to save Loba’s life. The door remains open for the potential mending of their relationship in the future. |
Shifting the focus to Octane, his relationship with Lifeline has been put through a series of tests, especially since Season 12, when he assumed the role of a spy on behalf of his grandfather, the arch-villain Duardo. The complexities of Octane's familial ties and the shadow of his grandfather's deception boost his character’s depth and contribute to the overarching narrative.
Now, for the part about “character deaths," which took center stage in Reed's short speech when she said, "Maybe not everyone will make it out alive,"
Everyone was hanging on the edge of their seats, but the execution of this promise left much to be desired. The sole casualty in Kill Code is Duardo Silva, Octane's father, who’s actually Torres Silva, Eduardo Silva’s father, and Octane’s grandfather. Confusing, right? Well, what matters is that the unexpected twist of the big bad boss meeting his end at Revenant’s hand, pun intended, and then Revenant betraying everyone else by taking over with the shell army, adds a little extra spice to this story. However, the impact of this character death on the game's dynamics is minimal, since we’re not letting go of a character that’s vital to the Apex Games.
The narrative twist was surprising, that’s for sure, but the collective expectation of a significant Legend's death, the gameplay implications, and the intertwining lore and battle royale mechanics that would be, were not fully realized. The disappointment comes from the buildup Respawn did, leaving fans speculating about who would disappear and how that would change the game.
Kill Code undeniably boosts the game's lore, raising questions about Revenant's role in the Apex Games and potential vacancies for iconic characters like Kuben Blisk from Titanfall 2. However, the execution falls short in terms of impact. The live event, while attempting to bridge the animated shorts with the game, lacks a spectacle like what we can find in games like Fortnite. The limited-time mode failed to captivate players, and the cutscenes lacked narrative significance, making them just that: a cutscene.
In the aftermath of Kill Code, Apex Legends finds itself back at square one, with characters reverting to their previous dynamics. All we really got from this was Revenant and Loba switching roles.
As we await the next chapter in the Apex Legends’ story, the spotlight falls on Octane, offering a glimmer of hope for intriguing character arcs in the future.
