Riot is Removing League of Legends' Demote Protection Shield

Riot Games is making big changes to League of Legends' ranked system for the second split of 2024. Riot Games will remove the controversial demotion protection system between divisions, a feature that has sparked debate for years. This means that players will no longer be protected by a hard barrier at zero LP within a division during a losing streak. Instead, they will face demoting to a lower division if their LP loss exceeds zero.

This demotion protection system has been a fixture in League for over a decade, providing a safety net for players, preventing them from dropping divisions too quickly, and boosting players’ chances to get specific League of Legends ranked rewards.

The Infamous Demote Protection Shield

Riot's removal of this system will make the ranked climb more challenging and unforgiving. Players will need to work harder to maintain their current division or progress to higher ones without the safety net previously provided by the system.

In the second split of Season 14, LP will transition smoothly between divisions, making the demotion process more fluid. For example, if a player loses a match at 10 LP and loses 25 LP in total, they will move to 85 LP in the division below. This change aims to create a more consistent and transparent ranked experience, similar to systems seen in other games like VALORANT.

When does League of Legends Season 14 Split 1 end?

League of Legends Season 14 Split 1 ends on May 14. Split 2 begins only a few hours later, after the respective patch is released and everyone’s ranks are reset. This means you can pre-purchase your Placement matches and start out in a higher rank before May 15 by using a LoL Elo Boosting service.

Despite the changes mentioned above, it's important to note that demotions between tiers (such as Gold to Silver) will still have a hard barrier in place. While players can still be demoted from a tier, they will be placed at either 25, 50, or 75 LP in the next lowest division based on their internal matchmaking rating (MMR).

In addition to the removal of the demotion protection system, other changes are coming to ranked play in the second split of 2024. Players who perform well in placement games will have a higher ceiling, allowing them to start in higher ranks. Additionally, duo queue will be reintroduced at the Master tier.

Victorious Kog Maw

What is the LoL Season 14 Split 1 Victorious skin?

The Victorious skin for League of Legends Season 14 Split 1 is Victorious Kog Maw. This skin will be awarded during Split 2, to players who earned enough points during the first ranked split.

The second split of the 2024 League of Legends ranked season will begin with the transition from May 14 to May 15, coinciding with the launch of Patch 14.10.

These changes mark a big shift in the ranked experience, aiming to create a more competitive and dynamic environment for players while addressing long-standing issues.

There’s only one week left to guarantee your split rewards, so you need to act fast and get the best League of Legends rank you can before it’s too late!
